Chapter 1 - The Heartbeat Behind the Door

Two months after our divorce, I ran into my ex-husband in a Manhattan hospital. He looked at me with that same cold expression and asked, “You’re sick? And you came alone?” I put one hand over the curve beneath my coat and said, “I’m not sick, Adrian. I’m pregnant.” For the first time in three years, the most feared man in New York lost control of his face.
My name is Claire Bennett.
I was sitting alone in the maternity wing of a private hospital, nearly sixteen weeks pregnant and divorced for exactly sixty-three days.
Two months earlier, I had left Adrian Moretti’s penthouse with two suitcases, my maiden name, and no intention of ever looking back.
I changed my number.
Resigned from Moretti Capital.
Moved to Brooklyn Heights.
And tried to erase him from my life.
Then the baby moved inside me.
Reality had other plans.
A nurse called my name, and I stood to follow her down the hall.
That was when I saw him.
Adrian.
Black coat. Broad shoulders. Perfect posture.
Even from behind, I knew him instantly.
Beside him stood Marco Bellini, his longtime right-hand man, holding a medical file.
Then I heard the doctor mention Vanessa Russo.
Vanessa.
Adrian’s first love.
The woman whose name he had once whispered in bed beside me.
I stepped behind a half-open fire door.
I didn’t want him to see me.
There was nothing left to say.
Our divorce was final.
And when we signed those papers, Adrian had no idea I was pregnant.
Technically, neither did I.
One week before the divorce became final, I took three tests.
All positive.
For one insane moment, I almost told him.
Then I remembered the night he stood by the penthouse windows and said, calmly, “Claire, we should end this.”
So I signed.
I refused to use a baby to hold onto a man who had already let me go.
“Claire?”
I froze.
Marco had seen me.
His eyes dropped to my stomach.
Then Adrian stepped into the hallway.
He followed Marco’s gaze.
And saw me.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
“You’re sick?” Adrian asked.
Then his eyes shifted to the empty chair beside me.
“You came alone?”
I almost closed my coat.
Instead, I placed my hand over my stomach.
“I’m not sick.”
His gaze followed my hand.
“I’m here for a prenatal appointment.”
Silence.
“I’m pregnant.”
Something cracked through his expression.
I turned away.
“Claire. Stop.”
I kept walking.
Then his footsteps came fast behind me.
“How far along are you?”
“That’s none of your business.”
“How far?”
I looked at him.
“Almost sixteen weeks.”
His face lost color.
I watched him do the math.
Then came the question.
“Whose baby is it?”
I laughed because otherwise I might have cried.
“Mr. Moretti, my child has nothing to do with you.”
His jaw tightened.
“We’ve been divorced sixty-three days.”
“So?”
“You’re sixteen weeks pregnant.”
His voice changed.
Not anger.
Hope.
Terrified hope.
“Claire…”
He stepped closer.
“This baby is mine, isn’t it?”
I looked at the man who had hidden me emotionally for most of our marriage.
“You told me to end things.”
“I didn’t know.”
“That’s exactly the point.”
I opened the ultrasound-room door.
“You don’t get to decide this belongs to you now just because you finally discovered it exists.”
Then I stepped inside.
The technician dimmed the lights.
Cold gel touched my stomach.
A tiny shape appeared on the monitor.
And then the room filled with a heartbeat.
Fast.
Strong.
Alive.
I started crying.

What I didn’t know was that Adrian had never left the hallway.
And when that faint heartbeat reached him through the closed door, the man who terrified half of New York finally looked terrified himself.
