Chapter 19 - The Moretti Name Finally Left the Building

Moretti Capital removed the Moretti name from its headquarters when Elena was twenty-seven.

Not from the company.

From the building.

The sign had been there for fifty-two years.

MORETTI CAPITAL.

Three generations.

The board renovated headquarters and proposed simply:

MC GLOBAL INVESTMENTS.

Corporate.

Boring.

Modern.

Adrian hated it.

Pretended not to.

I noticed.

Of course.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You have been staring at the rendering for eight minutes.”

“The font is bad.”

“This is not about fonts.”

He sighed.

“No.”

The Moretti name had not given him identity anymore.

But watching it disappear still felt like watching a piece of his father come down.

His grandfather.

His younger self.

Even the man who hurt me belonged to that history.

Loss did not need to be rational to be real.

“You can be sad.”

“I know.”

“You don't have to defend the old structure to miss it.”

He nodded.

That helped.

The board invited family members to the unveiling.

Elena came.

Not as heir.

As shareholder.

No special seat.

Good.

Helena Crawford spoke.

She explained the company had become more international.

More professionally governed.

Less dependent on a family brand.

Then she thanked the Moretti family without turning them into mythology.

Adrian listened.

At the end, workers removed the old brass letters.

M.

O.

R.

E.

T.

T.

I.

Elena squeezed his hand.

He looked at her.

“You okay?” she asked.

“No.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

“Your mother ruined this family.”

“Yes.”

I stood nearby.

“I'm here.”

They ignored me.

The letters were donated to a company archive.

Adrian refused to take one home.

I was proud.

Marco wanted the M.

Nobody allowed it.

At dinner afterward, Vanessa raised a glass.

“To becoming boring.”

Adrian frowned.

“You all use that word like a compliment.”

“It is.”

Elena added:

“Healthy institutions are boring.”

Adrian looked wounded.

“Law school destroyed you.”

Maybe.

After dinner, Elena asked to walk with us.

Three adults through Manhattan.

No security drama.

No family office.

Just city noise.

We passed a building with the old Moretti name visible from a neighboring street.

Elena looked up.

“Do you wish it stayed?”

Adrian thought.

“Yes.”

Then:

“And no.”

Both.

Always both.

“Why no?”

“Because if the company needs my name to remain valuable, I didn't build enough beyond the name.”

Elena nodded.

“You did.”

That broke him slightly.

He looked away.

I took his hand.

No embarrassment.

We were too old for emotional branding.

Then Elena said:

“I’m thinking about changing mine.”

We both stopped.

“To Bennett?”

“No.”

“What?”

She smiled.

“Adding Claire.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Elena Bennett Claire Moretti?”

Adrian looked horrified.

“That is legally inefficient.”

She laughed.

“Kidding.”

I almost killed her.

Then she became serious.

“I’m keeping Moretti.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“Not because of the company.”

“Okay.”

“Because it’s yours.”

He swallowed.

“And Grandma’s.”

Vanessa.

“And mine.”

There it was.

Names did not have to be institutions.

They could simply be relationships.

Adrian nodded.

“That’s enough.”

May you like

Yes.

It was.
