Chapter 1 - THE CHRISTMAS RESORT THAT WAS NEVER HERS

“Welcome to MY luxury Christmas resort!” my sister Vanessa announced, lifting her champagne glass inside my $1.8 million mountain cabin. Twenty strangers applauded while I stood stunned in the doorway. She’d secretly rented out the home my late husband and I had spent years restoring! When she spotted me, she whispered, “Don’t embarrass me. You’re rich enough to share!” I smiled, photographed everything, and contacted my lawyer. But what we uncovered about her reservations was far worse.

“Welcome to my exclusive Christmas mountain resort!” my sister proudly announced, raising her champagne glass inside the cabin I’d spent seven years renovating. I stood motionless in the doorway as strangers applauded beside the mahogany staircase I’d spent $86,000 restoring—and realized she’d secretly been renting out my home.

I’m Rebecca Miller, forty-two, a commercial architect from Denver, Colorado.

Seven years earlier, I’d bought an abandoned mountain lodge near Breckenridge for $620,000.

Everything needed replacing.

Plumbing, electrical systems, roofing, insulation, and structural components.

I’d invested another $900,000 turning it into a stunning winter retreat.

The property was now valued at approximately $1.8 million.

But it was more than an investment.

It was where my late husband Michael and I had dreamed of retiring before cancer claimed him four years earlier.

Every wooden beam held memories.

Every window framed mountains he adored.

And now my older sister Vanessa stood beside our fireplace, pretending she owned the place.

“Rebecca!”

She noticed me.

Her smile briefly vanished.

Then she composed herself.

“Everyone, this is my little sister. She helps with property maintenance.”

Several guests nodded courteously.

I stared.

“Maintenance?”

Vanessa hurried over and gripped my elbow.

“What are you doing here?” she whispered.

“It’s my cabin.”

“Lower your voice!”

Behind her, twenty guests enjoyed expensive wine and hors d’oeuvres beneath Christmas decorations I’d never purchased.

A promotional display without a banner featured photographs of the lodge.

Vanessa had clearly arranged an elaborate business event.

“Who are these people?” I asked.

“Potential clients. I’m launching a luxury holiday retreat business.”

“Inside my house?”

She rolled her eyes.

“Don’t be dramatic. You barely use this place.”

I pulled away.

“How did you get inside?”

“Mom gave me the spare key.”

My stomach sank.

Three months earlier, I’d entrusted Mother with an emergency key.

Vanessa leaned nearer.

“Look, I’ve already sold several Christmas packages. You should be grateful I’m making your property productive.”

“Without asking me?”

“We’re family!”

Then she said something that changed everything.

“Besides, you can afford it. Michael left you plenty of money.”

For a moment, words failed me.

She’d used my husband’s death to justify exploiting me.

I glanced toward the fireplace.

Michael’s favorite photograph was missing from the mantel.

Vanessa’s business cards occupied its place.

Something inside me went cold.

But I didn’t shout.

I didn’t disrupt the guests’ evening.

Instead, I discreetly photographed the decorations, catering setup, and promotional materials.

Then I went outside and called my attorney.

“Daniel,” I said, watching snow drift across the driveway, “my sister has turned my private residence into a commercial resort.”

He paused.

“Does she have written authorization?”

“None.”

“Then don’t sign anything, and preserve everything you can.”

I glanced through the illuminated windows.

Vanessa was laughing again.

May you like

She believed my silence meant victory.

She had no idea what I was about to uncover.
