Chapter 3 - THE NIGHT I EXPOSED MY SISTER

Saturday brought heavy snowfall.

By six o’clock, elegant vehicles filled my driveway.

Inside, Vanessa wore a shimmering emerald dress while greeting potential customers.

She froze when I entered with Daniel.

“Rebecca, not tonight!”

I surveyed the room.

Several attendees recognized me from the earlier reception.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Ms. Miller, we need to discuss the property’s ownership and these reservations.”

Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.

“Everyone, please excuse my sister. She’s having trouble understanding our business arrangement.”

I placed a copy of the deed on the table.

“There is no business arrangement.”

The room fell quiet.

A middle-aged guest raised his hand.

“Excuse me. Are you saying Vanessa doesn’t own this resort?”

“Correct. I own this private residence, and I never authorized commercial bookings.”

Vanessa flushed.

“You’re embarrassing me!”

“No,” I replied calmly. “I’m correcting information that concerns my property.”

Daniel presented the disputed authorization.

“My client denies signing this document. Its authenticity is being investigated.”

One guest stepped backward.

“But I paid a $9,000 deposit!”

Another woman gasped.

“We paid $12,000!”

Vanessa raised both hands.

“Everybody calm down! The reservations are secure!”

I shook my head.

“They aren’t authorized by me.”

Her anger shifted to panic.

“You can’t cancel everything!”

“I can’t honor contracts I never agreed to.”

Daniel advised the guests to retain receipts, contact their payment providers, and seek refunds directly from the business that had collected their money.

I provided contact information for nearby licensed accommodations without guaranteeing availability or reimbursement.

Then Vanessa faced me.

“You owe me! I’ve worked for months arranging this!”

I held her furious gaze.

“You worked for months selling something that wasn’t yours.”

Mother suddenly appeared in the entrance.

“Rebecca! Stop humiliating your sister!”

I turned toward her.

“Did you give Vanessa my emergency key?”

Mom hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Did you know she was charging people?”

She averted her eyes.

“I thought you wouldn’t mind.”

“Then you should have asked.”

For once, Mother had nothing to say.

Vanessa began crying.

“You’ve ruined my business!”

I glanced at the magnificent staircase Michael and I had restored together.

May you like

“No, Vanessa. You built your business on my property without permission. I won’t protect that decision from consequences.”

The reception ended.
