Chapter 2

They performed fast turns, sharp arm movements, high leg lifts, and complicated ballet steps mixed with modern choreography. The crowd cheered. The young dancers finished their short combination with perfect confidence.
Dylan turned toward The Silver Swans.
“Your turn.”
The hall filled with laughter again.
Some people lifted their phones higher, waiting to record the humiliation.
For a moment, the grandmothers and grandfathers did not move.
Then Arthur slowly removed his old jacket and dropped it near the edge of the stage.
Clara took off her handbag and placed it beside him.
One by one, the others removed their loose sweaters, straightened their pink skirts, adjusted their ribbons, and stepped into position.
The laughter continued.
But there was neither anger nor fear on their faces.
Arthur looked at Dylan and said quietly,
“We did not come here for your pity.”
Dylan crossed his arms.
“Then why did you come?”
Arthur looked at the grandmothers beside him, then at the audience.
“We came to dance.”
The hall laughed again.
But Arthur simply raised his hand, asking for the music to start once more.
Clara touched the pink ribbon on her wrist and whispered,
“For Evelyn.”
Nobody understood what that meant.
Nobody knew Evelyn had been the ninth member of their group.
Nobody knew she had passed away six months earlier.
And nobody knew her final wish had been simple:

Go on that stage. Wear pink. And show them that old age can bend the body, but it cannot bury the soul.
The music started again.
