Chapter 2 - The Shadow Empire Awakens

Within twenty minutes, three black armored SUVs idle in the courtyard of Dante’s estate, their engines roaring softly like crouching beasts.

Dante stood in the kitchen, watching a private doctor tend to Noah’s bloodied knee and wrap him in a warm blanket. The boy refused to eat the food the housekeeper offered, his small hands clutching the photo of his mother against his chest.

“He’s going to stay here with Mrs. Gable,” Dante told Vincent, strapping a shoulder holster over his black shirt. “The estate is on red lockdown. If a single fly approaches these gates without clearance, put a bullet in it.”

“Understood, boss,” Vincent nodded, handing Dante an encrypted earpiece. “Matteo tracked Viktor Vance’s luxury sedan to an abandoned fish processing plant down at Pier 4. The vehicle hasn't moved for two hours.”

Dante walked over to Noah, bending down once more.

“Noah,” he said softly. “Look at me.”

The boy looked up, his eyes wide and trusting.

“I’m going to go get your mom now,” Dante promised, placing a heavy, warm hand on the boy’s small shoulder. “When I come back, she will be with me. Do you believe me?”

Noah nodded slowly. “My mom said you make bad people afraid. Are you going to make them afraid?”

Dante’s lips pulled into a thin, cold smile. “I’m going to make them wish they were never born.”

Ten minutes later, the convoy tore through the rain-slicked streets of Bellhaven, running every red light. In the lead vehicle, Dante sat in silence, checking the magazine of his customized tactical pistol.

Years ago, Dante had lost his own wife and unborn son to a car bomb planted by a long-dead rival. The grief had turned his heart to solid granite, making him the cold, unyielding lord of the city’s underworld. But looking at Noah tonight had awakened a sleeping dragon within his chest.

He wasn't fighting for territory tonight. He wasn't fighting for money.

He was fighting for a boy who refused to give up on his mother.

“Two minutes to Pier 4,” Matteo called out from the front passenger seat. “Perimeter security shows six armed guards on the south dock and four inside the main warehouse structure.”

“No survivors on the perimeter,” Dante commanded coldly. “We hit them fast, we hit them hard, and we clear a path straight to Rachel.”
