Chapter 5 - The Promises We Keep

The ride back to the estate was silent, save for the quiet sound of Rachel weeping soft tears of relief as she wrapped herself in Dante’s heated jacket. Dante kept his arm around her shoulders, offering a steady, protective presence that made her feel safer than she had in years.

“Thank you,” she whispered, looking up at his profile against the passing city lights. “Why did you do this for us? You don't even know us.”

Dante looked out the window at the dark highway. “A long time ago, I couldn't protect the people I loved. I swore that if God ever gave me another chance to save a family, I wouldn't fail.”

When the armored SUV pulled into the driveway of the Caruso estate at 3:30 AM, the front doors were already wide open.

Noah was standing in the doorway, wrapped in an oversized blanket, refusing to go to sleep despite the housekeeper’s gentle pleas.

As soon as the car door opened and Rachel stepped out, Noah dropped the blanket.

“Mom!” he screamed, running as fast as his little legs could carry him across the wet marble entrance.

“Noah! Oh, my baby!” Rachel fell to her knees, opening her arms wide as her son slammed into her chest, burying his face in her neck, sobbing uncontrollably.

“I knew he’d bring you back!” Noah cried, his small arms wrapped tightly around her neck. “I told them! I told the bad guard you didn't leave me!”

Dante stood near the car, watching the mother and son cling to each other beneath the chandelier light. For the first time in ten years, the heavy, crushing weight in his chest felt lighter.

Rachel looked up over Noah’s shoulder, her eyes meeting Dante’s. She didn't say a word, but the profound gratitude in her expression said everything.
