Chapter 2

“The fracture is at least several days old,” the doctor finished. “Possibly longer. And there are signs it has been repeatedly stressed instead of treated.”

Peter stared at him, unable to speak.

“He walked seven blocks on it?”

The doctor’s jaw tightened. “From what your nephew told us, yes.”

Peter looked through the glass panel beside the door. Drew lay beneath a thin hospital blanket, his small face almost disappearing against the pillow. Lily slept curled beside him, one hand wrapped around the sleeve of his gown.

A detective arrived shortly afterward.

Her name was Mara Ellison, and unlike the officers at Peter’s house, she asked questions that made Drew go completely still.

“What happens in the basement?”

Drew looked toward Peter before answering.

“It’s the punishment room.”

Peter felt something cold move through his chest.

Drew explained that Reena sent them downstairs whenever they cried, asked for food, mentioned their father, or tried calling Peter. Sometimes she locked the door for hours.

Sometimes overnight.

His leg had been injured four days earlier when he fell on the basement stairs.

“She said I was pretending,” Drew whispered.

Peter turned away, fighting the urge to smash his fist through the wall.

Then Detective Ellison asked a question that changed everything.

“Why did Reena tell people your uncle wasn’t allowed to see you?”

Drew frowned.

“She said Uncle Peter didn’t want us.”

Peter’s breath caught.

“No,” he whispered. “Drew, I called all the time.”

“I know now.”

The boy reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a crumpled envelope.

“I found this behind Dad’s toolbox downstairs.”

Peter recognized Aaron’s handwriting immediately.

His hands shook as he opened it.

The letter was dated two weeks before Aaron’s death.

Peter read the first sentence once.

Then again.

Peter,

If anything happens to me, do not let Reena keep the children.

His knees nearly gave out.

Aaron had written that Reena had been frightening him, controlling the money, isolating the children, and threatening to disappear with them if he ever told anyone.

At the bottom was one final line.

I changed my will. You are supposed to have custody.

Peter looked at Detective Ellison.

She was already reaching for her phone.

Then Drew whispered something even worse.

“There are more letters.”

“Where?”

May you like

Drew swallowed.

“In the wall.”
