Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR AARON FEARED

Peter’s hand remained frozen on the doorknob.

Across the hallway, Drew stood awkwardly on his crutches, his small face drained of color.

“Dad told me Dr. Haines was the man he was hiding from.”

The sentence seemed to change the shape of the room.

Peter slowly lowered his keys.

“Drew… when did your dad tell you that?”

The boy’s eyebrows pulled together as he tried to reach backward through three years of fractured childhood memory.

“I was little.”

“You’re still little.”

“I mean… littler.”

Despite everything, Peter nearly smiled.

Drew did not.

“He was putting me to bed. Mommy—I mean Reena—was downstairs yelling on the phone. Dad told me that if a man named Haines ever came to the house, I had to go to my room and lock the door.”

Peter’s stomach tightened.

“Did Haines ever come?”

Drew nodded.

“Once.”

Peter crouched in front of him.

“What happened?”

“He and Dad went into the garage.”

“What did they say?”

“I don’t know. But Dad was scared.”

Peter immediately called Mara.

She listened without interruption.

When he finished, she said, “Do not go anywhere.”

Peter gave a humorless laugh.

“I was just told the doctor who wants to meet me may have terrified my brother. I think staying home is the obvious choice.”

“No, Peter. I mean literally do not leave the house. I’m sending officers.”

His pulse quickened.

“Why?”

Mara hesitated.

“Because we just learned something else.”

Peter looked at Drew.

“What?”

“Dr. Haines gave us an address.”

“Yes.”

“It isn’t his house.”

Peter’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Then whose is it?”

“A property owned by Victor Hale.”

Silence.

Peter felt the pieces rearranging again.

Haines.

Victor.

Aaron.

Reena.

Every answer seemed to create a worse question.

“Was Haines setting me up?”

“We don’t know.”

“That’s becoming your favorite sentence.”

“I know.”

Mara’s voice softened.

“But listen to me. We’ve dispatched officers to the address. Nobody answers. Haines’s phone is off now.”

Peter stared through the front window.

A car passed beneath the streetlight.

For one irrational second, he imagined Victor inside.

Watching.

Waiting.

Drew whispered, “Uncle Peter?”

Peter turned.

“I’m staying.”

The boy visibly relaxed.

That broke Peter’s heart more than tears would have.

He helped Drew back to bed, then checked Lily.

She was asleep on her stomach, clutching a stuffed rabbit Peter had found in a closet.

He sat between the two mattresses until both children were breathing evenly.

At 1:14 a.m., headlights swept across the living room ceiling.

Peter’s body went rigid.

Then came a knock.

Three sharp taps.

He approached the door without opening it.

“Who is it?”

“Mara.”

Peter unlocked the door.

Detective Ellison stood outside with another officer.

Her expression told him something had changed.

“What happened?”

“We found Dr. Haines.”

“Where?”

“At Victor’s property.”

Peter stepped back.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Victor?”

“No.”

She entered.

“Haines says he went there because Aaron told him years ago to use that property if Peter Calder ever needed to be contacted.”

Peter stared at her.

“That makes no sense.”

“It gets stranger.”

Of course it did.

Mara opened a folder.

“Haines gave us a flash drive.”

Peter’s heartbeat accelerated.

“What’s on it?”

“A video.”

“Of Aaron?”

“Yes.”

Peter stopped breathing.

Mara studied him carefully.

“It was recorded four days after Aaron was legally declared d/e/@/d.”

Peter gripped the back of a chair.

“Play it.”

“Peter—”

“Play it.”

Mara placed her tablet on the dining table.

The screen flickered.

Then Aaron appeared.

Alive.

Peter made a sound he did not recognize.

His brother sat in what looked like a motel room.

Unshaven.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

But alive.

“Pete,” Aaron said into the camera.

Peter’s knees nearly gave way.

“If you’re watching this, then either I failed… or enough time has passed that the truth is finally safe.”

Peter covered his mouth.

Aaron continued.

“I need you to understand something first.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“Reena did not k/i/ll me.”

Peter froze.

Mara watched him.

Aaron’s recorded voice continued.

“She has done things I cannot forgive. But if you think she caused my d/e/@/th, you will miss the person who actually tried.”

Peter’s skin went cold.

“Victor Hale.”

There it was.

The name.

Aaron leaned closer to the camera.

“Victor is not Reena’s lover.”

Peter frowned.

“He is our half-brother.”

Peter actually stepped backward.

“What?”

Mara said nothing.

On-screen, Aaron exhaled shakily.

“Dad had another son before he married Mom. Victor found me three years ago. He said he wanted family.”

Peter stared at the screen in disbelief.

Aaron gave a bitter laugh.

“He wanted money.”

Peter’s mind spun.

Their father had never mentioned another child.

Not once.

Aaron explained that Victor had discovered their father had created an investment account decades earlier.

The account had grown into a fortune.

Nearly six million dollars.

Aaron and Peter were listed as beneficiaries.

Victor believed part of it belonged to him.

“He forged documents,” Aaron said. “Insurance. Loan papers. Transfers. When I found out, I confronted him.”

Aaron looked away from the camera.

“That was my mistake.”

The next part came slowly.

Victor threatened to expose Reena for financial fraud she had committed before marrying Aaron.

Reena had been terrified.

She helped Victor access bank information.

She lied.

Manipulated.

Covered things up.

But according to Aaron, Victor was the architect.

“He started putting something in my supplements,” Aaron said.

Peter’s hands began shaking.

“Haines discovered it.”

Dr. Haines had not been the enemy.

He had been trying to help.

Aaron explained that Haines secretly tested his bl/o/od and found signs of toxic exposure.

They created a plan.

Aaron would pretend to worsen.

Haines would make Victor believe Aaron suspected Reena.

Then, with the help of a private investigator, Aaron intended to expose everything.

But Victor moved first.

“The night I collapsed,” Aaron said, “I didn’t have a heart @tt/@ck.”

Peter’s throat closed.

“I was drugged.”

According to Aaron, Haines helped stage his transfer to another facility under a false name.

But then everything went wrong.

A man matching Aaron’s age and general appearance arrived at the same emergency department after a fatal accident.

Records became confused.

Victor somehow exploited the chaos.

Aaron was declared d/e/@/d.

The other man was cremated under Aaron’s identity.

Peter whispered, “Dear God.”

Aaron continued.

“I wanted to come home.”

His voice broke.

“I swear to you, Pete, I wanted to.”

Peter’s eyes filled.

“But Victor found Haines.”

The doctor’s office was threatened.

Evidence disappeared.

The private investigator vanished.

Aaron believed returning home would place Drew and Lily in immediate danger.

“So I left.”

Peter’s grief transformed instantly into anger.

“You left your children.”

Mara looked toward him.

On-screen, as though answering him, Aaron said:

“I know what you’re thinking.”

Peter stared.

“You’ll hate me for this.”

Aaron swallowed.

“You should.”

Peter’s jaw clenched.

“But I believed Reena would protect them because Victor needed her cooperative. I thought the children were safer with her than with me.”

Peter looked toward the hallway.

Drew’s broken leg.

Lily starving.

The basement.

Aaron’s calculation had been catastrophically wrong.

The video continued.

“If you ever see this, it means Victor’s control has broken.”

Then Aaron said something Peter never expected.

“Do not look for me.”

Peter stared.

“Why?”

The recording obviously could not answer.

“I changed my name. I built another life. I have watched the children from a distance.”

Peter’s face hardened.

Watched?

While Drew crawled seven blocks?

Watched while Lily went hungry?

His sadness burned into fury.

Then Aaron leaned forward.

“But if the children are ever in real danger, I will come back.”

The video ended.

Peter stared at the black screen.

Nobody spoke.

Finally Mara said, “There is one more file.”

Peter turned slowly.

“What?”

“A recent audio recording.”

“How recent?”

Mara looked directly at him.

“Yesterday.”

Peter’s entire body went still.

She pressed play.

Static.

Then Aaron’s voice.

Older.

Rougher.

But unmistakable.

“Peter, if Drew made it to you, then Reena finally lost control.”

Peter stopped breathing.

“And Victor will come for the children next.”

The recording crackled.

“Because the six million dollars was never left to you or me.”

A pause.

“Dad left it to Drew and Lily.”

Peter stared at Mara.

May you like

Aaron’s voice continued.

“And Victor just found out.”
