Chapter 5 - THE SECRET THEIR FATHER TOOK TO THE GRAVEPeter sat alone at the kitchen table long after everyone else had gone quiet.

The notebook lay open before him.
Victor thinks Walter was his father.
He is wrong.
Peter is Victor’s half-brother.
Peter read the sentence until the letters lost meaning.
Mara sat opposite him.
“You okay?”
“No.”
It was the only truthful answer.
“How?”
“We’re still piecing it together.”
Peter rubbed both hands over his face.
“My mother?”
Mara nodded slowly.
“Possibly.”
Peter laughed bitterly.
“So Victor is connected to me through Mom.”
“According to Aaron.”
Peter looked toward the hallway.
“Why would Aaron know this?”
The answer came the next morning.
From Reena.
She agreed to talk.
For the first time without an attorney.
Mara took Peter to the station.
Reena sat behind glass in a plain gray sweater.
Gone was the polished woman who once told everyone she wanted stability.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
Afraid.
Peter sat down.
“You locked them in a basement.”
Reena closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“You denied Drew treatment for a broken leg.”
“I know.”
“You let Lily starve.”
Her face crumpled.
“I know.”
Peter leaned closer.
“No excuses.”
“I’m not giving you one.”
His anger faltered only because she sounded sincere.
Not innocent.
Never innocent.
But sincere.
“Then explain.”
Reena looked toward Mara.
Then back to Peter.
“Victor controlled me.”
Peter’s jaw tightened.
“You still made choices.”
“Yes.”
“And the children paid for them.”
“Yes.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I became the thing I thought I was protecting them from.”
Peter looked away.
Reena began at the beginning.
Before marrying Aaron, she had worked at an investment firm.
She altered accounts to hide a debt her father had created.
Victor discovered it.
He blackmailed her.
Years later, after she married Aaron, Victor reappeared.
He believed Walter Calder was his father.
He wanted access to the family trust.
When Aaron began investigating, Victor threatened Reena.
Then Aaron disappeared.
“What happened the night Aaron supposedly d/i/ed?”
Reena trembled.
“He collapsed.”
“Because Victor p/o/isoned him?”
“I don’t know.”
“You said you knew Haines.”
“I did.”
She wiped her eyes.
“Haines called me. Told me Aaron was alive.”
Peter’s anger surged.
“You knew?”
“Not at first.”
“When?”
“Six months later.”
Peter stood.
“You knew for two and a half years?”
Reena flinched.
“Yes.”
Peter almost walked out.
Mara stopped him with a look.
Reena whispered, “Aaron made me promise not to tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor was watching you.”
Peter laughed sharply.
“So Aaron left his children with you?”
Reena’s face twisted.
“He believed I could keep Victor away.”
“And instead you @b/u/sed them.”
“I know.”
The words came out broken.
Peter sat again.
“Why?”
Reena looked down.
“At first, I didn’t.”
She described months of fear.
Victor calling.
Threatening.
Showing up.
Demanding access to documents.
Then Aaron contacted her secretly.
Told her he had learned Victor was not Walter’s son.
That proof existed.
Victor somehow discovered the conversation.
From then on, Reena became increasingly paranoid.
She stopped letting Peter visit.
Not because Aaron told her to.
Because she feared Drew might say something.
Then she began controlling the children.
Punishments.
Isolation.
The basement.
The behavior escalated until she became cruel.
No justification.
No heroic secret.
Just fear becoming cruelty.
Peter stared at her.
“You destroyed them.”
“I know.”
“Drew still thinks protecting Lily is his job.”
Reena began crying.
Peter felt no satisfaction.
“Who is Victor’s father?”
Reena wiped her face.
“Your mother never told Aaron directly.”
“Then how did he know?”
“Claire found letters.”
Peter went still.
“Letters from whom?”
“Your mother.”
The truth unfolded piece by piece.
Before marrying Walter Calder, Peter’s mother, Diane, had been engaged to another man.
Samuel Hale.
Victor’s father.
The relationship ended badly.
Diane later married Walter.
But shortly before the wedding, she discovered she was pregnant.
Victor was born secretly and adopted by Samuel’s sister.
Years later, Diane and Walter had Peter.
Meaning Victor and Peter shared a mother.
Aaron, however, had been adopted by Walter and Diane after years of infertility fears.
Peter’s entire childhood changed in one sentence.
“Aaron wasn’t biologically related to me?”
Reena shook her head.
“He knew only shortly before he disappeared.”
Peter stared through the glass.
Aaron had discovered that Peter—not Aaron—was Victor’s half-brother.
Then why hide it?
Because Victor’s claim to Walter’s estate was completely false.
But his connection to Diane remained real.
Mara asked, “Where’s Claire?”
Reena’s mouth tightened.
“With Aaron.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Peter slammed his hand against the table.
“You expect us to believe that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Aaron stopped trusting me.”
“Good.”
Reena winced.
“He contacts Claire through coded messages.”
Peter leaned forward.
“And the little girl?”
Reena looked confused.
“What little girl?”
Peter showed the photograph.
Her face changed.
“That’s not Aaron’s child.”
“Then who is she?”
Reena stared.
“My daughter.”
Silence.
Peter’s mind stopped.
Reena whispered, “Her name is Sophie.”
Peter looked at Mara.
Reena continued.
“I had her when I was nineteen. My parents raised her as my younger sister’s child.”
Peter stared at Claire’s image.
“Claire raised your daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Does Aaron know?”
“Yes.”
“And Sophie?”
“She thinks Claire is her mother.”
The secrets seemed endless.
Peter stood.
“I’m done.”
Before leaving, Reena called after him.
“Peter.”
He stopped.
“There’s one thing Aaron never told Claire.”
Peter turned.
“What?”
Reena’s face had gone pale.
“Victor didn’t cause Aaron’s collapse.”
Peter stared.
“Then who did?”
May you like
Reena whispered:
“Aaron did.”
