CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO RAN

CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO RAN

"Boss... Vincenzo's gone!"

Mateo's voice cut through the delivery room like a knife.

Alessandro spun toward the doorway.

The hallway was empty.

Only seconds earlier, Vincenzo Bell had been standing there with the same calm expression he had worn for nearly fifteen years.

Now he had vanished.

For one impossible heartbeat, Alessandro simply stared.

Then instinct took over.

"Lock down the hospital."

His voice was frighteningly calm.

"No one leaves."

Mateo was already speaking into his earpiece.

"All exits. Underground garage. Emergency stairwells. Roof access. Find Bell."

Four men sprinted into the corridor.

The thunder of their footsteps disappeared toward the elevators.

Inside the delivery room, Genevieve watched Alessandro's face change.

The rage that had brought him into the hospital was gone.

Confusion had replaced it.

Confusion...

And fear.

He looked back at her.

"What did you just say?"

She cried out before answering.

Another contraction crushed through her body.

The doctor leaned over her.

"Push, Genevieve!"

She obeyed, screaming through clenched teeth.

The baby's heartbeat remained steady.

Strong.

Alive.

The sound filled the room while Alessandro stood motionless.

His wife had just accused him of ordering the death of their own unborn child.

He could barely process the words.

"Who told you that?" he asked quietly.

Genevieve laughed bitterly.

"Don't pretend."

"I'm not pretending."

"You don't remember?"

"I remember everything."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You remember what he wanted you to remember."

Those words struck deeper than any accusation.

Alessandro's mind raced backward.

Seven months.

Conversations.

Phone calls.

Late-night strategy meetings.

Every single one had included Vincenzo.

Every decision.

Every report.

Every lead about Genevieve.

Every explanation.

Every reason she had supposedly disappeared.

He suddenly realized something horrifying.

He had never once investigated outside the information Vincenzo provided.

Not once.

Another contraction hit.

Genevieve screamed again.

The doctor checked the monitor.

"The baby's crowning."

The room erupted into motion.

Nurses prepared blankets.

The pediatrician positioned herself beside the warmer.

Nobody spoke to Alessandro anymore.

For the first time in his life...

He was completely powerless.

He couldn't negotiate.

Couldn't threaten.

Couldn't buy another outcome.

He could only watch.

Genevieve looked at him through tears.

"You really don't know."

Her voice had become strangely gentle.

Almost sympathetic.

"You actually believed I abandoned you."

"I never believed you'd leave willingly."

"Then why didn't you find me?"

"I searched everywhere."

"Did you?"

She stared into his eyes.

"Or did you search where Vincenzo wanted you to search?"

The question froze him.

Flashbacks surfaced.

A warehouse in Brooklyn.

A private airfield in New Jersey.

A yacht intercepted off Long Island.

Three safe houses.

Two rival families interrogated.

Millions of dollars spent.

Every location...

Suggested by Vincenzo.

Not one had produced evidence.

Not one.

His stomach tightened.

The doctor interrupted them.

"One more push!"

Genevieve screamed with every ounce of strength she had left.

Suddenly—

A tiny cry echoed through the room.

High.

Fragile.

Alive.

Everything stopped.

The baby had arrived.

One nurse laughed with relief.

Another wiped tears from her own eyes.

"It's a boy."

Those four words shattered Alessandro.

A son.

His son.

For seven months he hadn't even known the child existed.

Now he stood only a few feet away.

Unable to move.

The pediatric team carried the newborn toward the warmer.

The baby's cries grew louder.

Healthy.

Strong lungs.

The doctor smiled.

"Apgar looks excellent."

Genevieve collapsed against the pillows, exhausted.

She closed her eyes.

Whispering only one sentence.

"Please don't let him take my baby."

Alessandro heard it.

Every syllable.

His heart broke all over again.

At that exact moment—

Mateo burst back into the room.

His suit was soaked from the rain outside.

His breathing was uneven.

"Boss."

Alessandro looked up.

"We lost him."

"What?"

"He switched jackets with a maintenance worker in the basement."

Mateo's jaw tightened.

"By the time security caught on, Bell was gone."

Silence.

Then Mateo added something even worse.

"We searched his office."

"And?"

"It was empty."

"What do you mean empty?"

"Every file."

"Every computer."

"Every hard drive."

"Destroyed."

Alessandro slowly closed his eyes.

This hadn't been a spontaneous escape.

Vincenzo had prepared for this.

Long before tonight.

The young nurse approached Genevieve carefully.

"We found the backpack."

Genevieve immediately opened her eyes.

"It's still there?"

"Yes."

She nodded toward Alessandro.

"Give it to him."

Everyone stared.

Including Alessandro.

Genevieve swallowed painfully.

"I don't have the strength anymore."

Her voice trembled.

"The truth is inside."

She looked directly into her husband's eyes.

"If you still love me..."

"Read everything."

"And then decide whether I deserve your hatred."

The nurse handed Alessandro the worn blue backpack.

It was surprisingly light.

He unzipped it.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Medical records.

Photographs.

A pregnancy journal.

And...

A black USB drive taped beneath a notebook.

Genevieve watched him carefully.

"Start with the notebook."

His hands trembled as he opened the first page.

The handwriting was unmistakably hers.

The first sentence made his blood run cold.

April 9. Vincenzo told me Alessandro signed the papers to erase our baby before he was born.
