CHAPTER 7: THE CHILD IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

CHAPTER 7: THE CHILD IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The room fell deathly still.

Alessandro stared at the photograph as if it had become a loaded weapon in his hands.

A little girl.

Six years old.

Standing inside the nursery he and Genevieve had designed together after they married—years before they had ever expected to have children.

She was smiling.

Too naturally.

As if she belonged there.

On the back, the sentence burned into his mind.

Before your son was born... there was another child.

Genevieve slowly shook her head.

"No..."

Her voice was barely audible.

"We've never had another child."

"I know."

Alessandro answered automatically.

Yet something about the girl's face refused to let him look away.

The dark eyes.

The shape of her jaw.

The tiny dimple on her left cheek.

His heartbeat slowed.

He had seen that face before.

Not the girl.

Someone who looked exactly like her.

He crossed the room toward the window, still staring at the picture.

Then it struck him.

His late mother.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

The same eyes.

The same smile preserved in old family portraits hanging inside Romano Manor.

Mateo noticed Alessandro's expression.

"What is it?"

Alessandro handed him the photograph.

"Look at her."

Mateo frowned.

Seconds later, his own eyes widened.

"She looks like..."

"My mother."

Neither man spoke again.

Genevieve watched them in confusion.

"What are you talking about?"

Alessandro turned toward her.

"My mother died when I was twelve."

"I know."

"She had a younger sister."

Genevieve blinked.

"You told me she died as a teenager."

"That's what everyone believed."

He paused.

"What if she didn't?"

The possibility hung heavily over the room.

At that exact moment—

Mateo's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Talk."

A familiar voice came through.

It was Sofia Romano.

Alessandro's eighty-year-old aunt.

The last surviving sibling of his mother.

She sounded terrified.

"Alessandro..."

"You need to come home."

"What happened?"

"They're here."

"Who?"

"The people your father warned us about."

Alessandro's expression darkened.

"What people?"

For several seconds...

Only breathing came through the phone.

Finally Sofia whispered,

"The Black Ledger."

The line went dead.

Twenty-five minutes later.

Romano Manor.

Rain hammered against the massive iron gates.

Luxury SUVs roared through the entrance.

Security teams flooded the estate.

Alessandro ran through the front doors with Mateo close behind.

He found Aunt Sofia waiting inside the library.

She looked pale.

Older than she had only hours before.

In her hands rested an ancient leather journal.

She locked the doors herself before speaking.

"I prayed your father would burn this."

She placed the journal on the desk.

"He never could."

Alessandro opened the first page.

His father's handwriting.

Neat.

Precise.

The title alone made his stomach tighten.

The Romano Bloodline Agreement

"What is this?"

Sofia closed her eyes.

"A sin."

She took a long breath.

"Forty years ago..."

"...your grandfather made a bargain."

The story unfolded like poison.

In the early 1980s, the Romano empire had been collapsing.

Banks refused loans.

Competitors circled like wolves.

Bankruptcy was inevitable.

Then a secret organization offered salvation.

Unlimited financing.

Political protection.

International influence.

The price...

One child from every generation of the Romano family.

Not for sacrifice.

Not for murder.

For control.

Children raised in secret.

Conditioned.

Turned into loyal assets inside governments, corporations, and financial institutions.

A hidden army.

Known only through one name.

The Black Ledger.

Alessandro stared at his aunt.

"You're telling me my grandfather sold children?"

Tears filled Sofia's eyes.

"He believed he was saving the family."

"My father accepted this?"

"No."

"He tried to end it."

She looked toward the fireplace.

"That's why he died."

Silence.

Alessandro slowly lowered the journal.

His father's fatal car accident twenty-four years earlier...

Hadn't been an accident.

Then another realization struck him.

"The girl..."

Sofia nodded.

"I've seen her."

"When?"

"Three years ago."

"Where?"

"A charity gala."

"Who was she?"

Sofia swallowed.

"Bianca introduced her."

Alessandro's pulse stopped.

May you like

"Introduced her as what?"

"...her daughter."
