Chapter 5 - Gathering the Evidence

I needed solid proof to bring them down completely. I left Kristin under the watchful care of a dedicated nurse and drove over to Mrs. Moffitt’s corner store, whose front security camera pointed directly at the only exit of our residential street. The high-definition video footage confirmed that my wife had never walked out of our house that Tuesday.
After that, I went straight back to the house and walked into Zachary’s bedroom. His computer was still turned on, and his primary messaging app was actively open on the desktop screen. There were weeks of detailed conversations with my mother discussing how to kick Kristin out so they could regain full control of my monthly salary and the house deed.
The very last text message had been sent while my wife was lying broken inside the storage shed.
“Leave her in there until she learns her place, and if she loses that baby, it will be even better for everyone involved.”
I immediately copied all the text conversations, saved the security footage from Mrs. Moffitt’s store onto multiple USB drives, and took clean screenshots of everything. Then I returned to the hospital with a sense of mental clarity I had never experienced in my entire life. I was no longer dealing with a simple family dispute, but rather a calculated plot to destroy my wife through brute violence.
My brother Zachary called my phone right before I reached the hospital entrance.
“Mom is extremely sick because of the stress you are causing her,” he said coldly over the line. “Withdraw the police complaint immediately and send us money for her medical care, or I will post online that you are a terrible son trying to imprison an elderly woman.”
I quietly pressed the button to record the incoming call.
“What about Kristin?” I asked with a trembling voice. “What about the unborn baby that you two murdered?”

“Do not start with that dramatic nonsense,” he snapped back without hesitation. “She was being completely stubborn, and besides, a pregnancy can easily be replaced, but a mother cannot.”
I told him directly that I already possessed the neighborhood camera footage, the complete chat logs, and Kristin’s sworn testimony. All that came through the receiver was a harsh, ragged breath before he slammed the phone down without another word.
