Chapter 7 - Confronting the Past and Family Betrayal

I listened to his lecture quietly before giving my final answer.
“The family name did not bleed out on that cold storage floor, but my wife did.”
When they realized I would not yield, they launched an aggressive campaign on social media against us. They posted photos of my mother from years ago and claimed that I was an ungrateful child trying to steal her home under the influence of an ambitious wife. They even manufactured a rumor that the pregnancy was already failing before the incident and that Kristin had intentionally brought on the miscarriage out of pure spite.
For a few painful hours, hundreds of strangers on the internet left nasty comments calling me a heartless monster.
To set the record straight, the Prosecutor’s Office authorized a formal public statement regarding the ongoing criminal case. The official document outlined the verified emergency rescue, the documented physical injuries, the felony unlawful confinement, and the mountain of digital evidence recovered from the suspect’s devices. Saint Anthony Hospital also released a medical summary confirming that the placental abruption was directly caused by severe physical trauma and prolonged medical neglect. Mrs. Moffitt voluntarily provided a signed statement verifying that Kristin had never left the property boundaries.
The public lies collapsed into dust almost overnight.

While the legal battle raged outside, my wife was fighting a completely different war inside her hospital room. She spent nearly a full month undergoing intensive treatment. Whenever she woke up during the night, she would curl her body into a tiny ball and plead with the nurses not to turn off the lights. If she heard the heavy metallic sound of a door locking down the hallway, she would instantly hyperventilate in terror. When a food service worker brought a hot bowl of beef broth into the room, the strong aroma triggered immediate panic attacks.
Her parents drove straight down from their small farm near Flagstaff to be by her side. I had deliberately kept the tragic news of the baby from them during their long drive so they would not have to process the heartbreak while operating a vehicle. When they finally walked into the room and saw their daughter’s broken body, her mother collapsed onto the floor in tears, and her father, a hardened man who had never cried in his life, had to support himself against the wall.
