The rookie firefighter reached Captain Ryan Carter just as paramedics loaded the first patients into ambulances.
"Captain..."
Ryan turned impatiently.
"What is it?"
The young firefighter slowly opened his hand.
Inside lay a plain platinum wedding band.
"I think... this belongs to your wife."
Ryan stared.
The world around him seemed to disappear.
"Where did you get that?"
"She gave it to me."
Ryan's heartbeat stopped for a moment.
"What did she say?"
The rookie swallowed.
"She said..."
"Tell him our son deserves a father who knows how to choose."
Ryan looked toward the ambulance that had already begun pulling away.
Without another word, he started running.
But the doors closed before he reached them.
