CHAPTER 3: The Husband Who Thought He Was Safe

Mark adjusted his loosened tie and looked down at his wife as if he were the reasonable one in the room.
“Your father can’t touch me,” he said.
That was the lie he had been telling himself for months.
He had repeated it through late meetings, secret calls, forged transfers, and quiet little betrayals hidden behind marriage.
Mark did not only want Emily’s money.
He wanted freedom from ever needing her again.
His firm, Calder Ridge Capital, had been built partly on Whitmore introductions, Whitmore investors, and Whitmore patience. Mark preferred to call that merit.
Emily had once admired his ambition. She had mistaken appetite for discipline.
Now, on the marble floor, she saw him more clearly than she ever had while standing beside him.
He was not a man who snapped in one terrible moment.
He was a man who had been unraveling in expensive suits for years
