CHAPTER 7: The Marriage He Was Selling

Mark’s betrayal was never only romantic.
The affair was ugly, but the paperwork was worse.
Over the past year, he had quietly used Emily’s name to strengthen client confidence while planning to shift liabilities away from himself. He talked in public about family values, stability, legacy.
In private, he was preparing an exit strategy that would leave her pregnant, legally cornered, and publicly humiliated.
He thought the marriage made her predictable.
He thought bruising her confidence would make her easier to manage.
Charles listened to the summary without interruption. Then he looked at Mark with the detached disappointment of a man reviewing a failed acquisition.
“You didn’t build a marriage,” he said. “You built a trap.”
Mark tried to answer, but his mouth only opened and closed once.
Emily had seen him charm senators, investors, and reporters. She had never seen him speechless.
From the floor, she realized something almost startling.
She was no longer afraid of him.
