Chapter 11 - The Final Proof

At 12:06 a.m., I heard Ethan moving upstairs.
I closed the laptop.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Not Daniel.
A text.
You don’t know me. But you need to stop asking questions about the trust.
I stared at it.
Another message arrived.
Vanessa isn’t the person you should be afraid of.
My mouth went dry.
Who is this?
No response.
I typed:
What child is named in the trust?
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Appeared again.
Then a photograph arrived.
It wasn’t Noah.
It was a scanned hospital document.
A birth record.
The image was grainy, but the names were readable.
Child: Lucas James Bennett.
Mother: Vanessa Marie Reed.
Father:
The line was blank.
My stomach dropped.
Date of birth:
Seven years earlier.
Seven years.
Ethan and I had been married eight.
I stared until the letters blurred.
Then another message came.
That certificate is not the dangerous part.
I typed with numb fingers.
What is?
The answer arrived immediately.
Ask Ethan why Lucas died.
I stopped breathing.
A floorboard creaked above me.
Then another message.
And ask him why your signature transferred $2.1 million into a trust created three weeks after the funeral.
I stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.
Upstairs, the bedroom door opened.
Ethan called down.
“Claire?”
I didn’t answer.
My phone vibrated again.
One final photograph appeared.
This one wasn’t a document.
It was Ethan.
Vanessa.
And a little boy I had never seen.
They were standing together outside a hospital.
The timestamp was seven years old.
Ethan was holding the boy.
Vanessa was crying.
And on Ethan’s left hand was the wedding ring I had placed there myself.

Beneath the photograph, the unknown sender had written one sentence:
Your husband didn’t start lying to you at dinner, Claire—he started before your first anniversary, and tomorrow Vanessa plans to make sure you never learn why.
