Chapter 4 - A Hidden Truth

I walked into the guest room and locked the door.

He knocked once.

“Claire.”

I didn’t answer.

Again.

“Claire, open the door.”

I changed into pajamas.

“You’re being ridiculous.”

I pulled back the blankets.

His footsteps eventually disappeared.

I didn’t cry.

That surprised me.

I had imagined that if my marriage ever cracked open, grief would be loud.

Instead, I felt something colder.

Clarity.

At 12:41 a.m., my phone vibrated.

Rachel.

Are you awake?

Yes.

I expected her to ask whether I was okay.

Instead she wrote:

Check the photos from tonight.

My stomach tightened.

What photos?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then returned.

I took pictures during dinner. Look at the one I just sent. Zoom in behind Ethan.

An image arrived.

I opened it.

The photograph had been taken shortly after appetizers. Ethan was turned toward Marcus. I was laughing at something Rachel had said.

Vanessa was looking down.

Her phone was beneath the table.

Nothing unusual.

Then I zoomed in.

The screen was visible.

Barely.

A message thread.

I couldn’t read the conversation.

But I could read the name at the top.

E.

My husband.

I called Rachel.

She answered immediately.

“You saw it?”

“It could be anybody.”

“You know it isn’t.”

I said nothing.

Rachel lowered her voice.

“I watched her texting him during dinner.”

“Did you see Ethan respond?”

“Twice.”

My mouth went dry.

“He was sitting beside her.”

“I know.”

That was the part that made it strange.

Why text someone sitting six inches away?

Unless the message wasn’t something they wanted anyone else to hear.

I ended the call and stared at the dark ceiling.

Then another memory surfaced.

Three weeks earlier, Ethan had changed his phone passcode.

I knew because I had tried to use his phone to call mine when I couldn’t find it.

For years his code had been 0814.

Our wedding date.

Suddenly it wasn’t.

When I asked why, he said his company had updated its cybersecurity requirements.

I believed him.

At 1:18 a.m., I got out of bed.

I didn’t go through his phone.

I didn’t need to.

Instead, I opened my laptop.

Ethan and I shared a household calendar.

Trips.

Bills.

Appointments.

Dinner reservations.

I searched Vanessa’s name.

Eleven entries appeared during the previous six months.

Most were innocent.

Vanessa birthday.

Vanessa charity event.

Dinner—V/M/E/C.

Then I noticed two appointments I didn’t recognize.

VR CONSULT.

Both during afternoons when Ethan had told me he was meeting clients.

I clicked one.

Location hidden.

Interesting.

I checked our joint credit card.

Nothing.

Then our airline rewards account.

Nothing.

Then our toll records.

That was where I found it.

On September 14, Ethan’s car had passed through the Skyway toll plaza at 2:08 p.m.

He had told me he was in Milwaukee that day.

His calendar said client meeting.

His car had been traveling southeast.

Toward Indiana.

I sat perfectly still.

One discrepancy means nothing.

Two means curiosity.

Three means you stop guessing and start documenting.

I took screenshots.

I saved them to a folder.

I named it TAX RECEIPTS.

Then I went to sleep.
