Chapter 6 - Douglas Was Still Inside the Estate
Shortly after eight, estate security found Douglas in an administrative office above the garage.
He was using a secondary computer.
Several access logs had recently been opened.
Julian entered with two senior staff members present.
Douglas stood quickly.
“Julian, there’s an explanation.”
“Good. Explain Tessa’s wages.”
Douglas looked toward Tessa, who stood near the doorway with Lucy.
“There were administrative delays.”
Lucy quietly said, “That isn’t true.”
Douglas looked irritated.
“This is not an appropriate conversation for a child.”
Julian’s expression hardened.
“That child is the reason we’re finally having the conversation.”
Douglas became silent.
Elise sent Julian a message moments later.
Several missing payroll transfers had passed through the Household Reserve before reaching the Mercer Community Initiative, a charitable foundation chaired by Vivienne.
Vivienne regularly appeared at public events speaking about education, working families, and community opportunity.
Julian showed Douglas the transaction.
The manager lowered his head.
“Vivienne said it was temporary.”
Tessa stared at him.
“Temporary?”
Douglas rubbed his forehead.
“The foundation had financial commitments coming due before an annual donor review. She wanted the accounts to appear stronger. She said everything would be returned.”
Julian looked at Tessa.
