Chapter 8 - The File With Tessa’s Name

Elise arrived with two members of her audit team.

Within the next hour, the situation became much larger.

They found inflated vendor expenses.

Education assistance that had never reached several employees.

Unapproved deductions.

Artificial bonuses assigned to accounts controlled by intermediaries.

And repeated transfers from staff-related funds into the charitable foundation.

Then Elise opened another file.

HIGH DEPENDENCY — LIMITED ESCALATION.

Tessa’s name was there.

So were five others.

Lucy quietly read the title.

“What does that mean?”

Julian answered carefully.

“It means someone believed these employees would have a harder time speaking up.”

Tessa covered her mouth.

Vivienne remained silent.

Then Elise found a folder carrying Tessa’s surname.

ROWAN — RESPONSE PLAN.

Inside were notes about her late rent.

Her landlord’s contact information.

Even the name of Lucy’s school.

There was also a drafted letter suggesting that Tessa’s financial difficulties might make her household unstable.

Lucy moved closer to her mother.

“Why did they write about us?”

Vivienne answered quickly.

“Nothing was ever sent.”

Julian stared at her.

“But someone prepared it.”

Douglas finally spoke.

“She told me what to put in it.”

Vivienne turned toward him.

“Douglas.”

He shook his head.

“I’m not taking responsibility for everything anymore.”

Julian looked at his sister.

“Why Tessa?”

Vivienne exhaled.

“Because she kept asking questions.”

Tessa spoke for the first time in several minutes.

“I asked when I would be paid.”

Vivienne responded impatiently.

“And then people start requesting records and explanations, and suddenly every simple administrative decision becomes an argument.”

Lucy stood up.

Her voice was quiet but completely clear.

“My mom wasn’t asking for something extra. She already worked for it.”

Nobody in the room had anything meaningful to add.
