CHAPTER 2 – THE FIRST BLOOD

CHAPTER 2 – THE FIRST BLOOD
The message disappeared from Rowan Hale's phone three seconds after Finley finished reading it.
Someone had programmed it to erase itself.
Finley cursed under his breath.
"Disposable number. Encrypted relay."
Rowan didn't answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the empty chairs surrounding the birthday table.
Thirty invitations.
Thirty betrayals.
Not one accident.
Whoever had organized tonight's humiliation hadn't wanted to kill him.
Not yet.
They wanted him to understand something far more dangerous.
He was already alone.
"Lock down the hotel," Rowan ordered quietly.
Finley immediately spoke into the hidden microphone beneath his collar.
"No one leaves."
Within seconds, black-suited security appeared from elevators and service corridors.
Hotel guests looked up in confusion as every entrance was quietly sealed.
No shouting.
No panic.
Just the silent efficiency that had made the Hale Organization feared for decades.
But Rowan knew something his guards did not.
The traitor had already left.
Because traitors never stayed to watch the explosion.
Downstairs, Maeve hurried across the employee hallway, still holding Piper's hand.
"You scared me."
"I was helping."
"You wandered into a private room."
"He looked lonely."
Maeve sighed.
"He wasn't lonely."
"Then why was everyone gone?"
Maeve had no answer.
She had worked at Sterling Court for almost four years.
She knew wealthy people.
She knew politicians.
She knew celebrities.
She had never seen an entire birthday banquet abandoned.
Something terrible had happened upstairs.
And somehow, Piper had walked straight into the middle of it.
Back in the private dining room, Finley placed a folder beside Rowan.
"The guest list."
Rowan opened it.
Every missing guest belonged to the inner circle.
Garrett.
August.
Vincent Russo.
Miles Carter.
Edward Flynn.
Men who had eaten at his table for years.
Men who owed him fortunes.
Men who had sworn loyalty over whiskey and blood.
Every single one had stayed away.
Not one had warned him.
That meant one thing.
They believed he could no longer retaliate.
Rowan slowly closed the folder.
"They've already chosen a new king."
Finley asked the question neither of them wanted answered.
"Who?"
Before Rowan could reply, another phone vibrated.
Not his.
Finley's.
One of their dock supervisors.
He answered.
His expression changed instantly.
"What?"
Silence.
"What do you mean they're gone?"
Another pause.
Then Finley lowered the phone.
"The East Harbor warehouse."
Rowan's voice remained calm.
"How much?"
"Every container."
The warehouse held nearly forty million dollars' worth of protected cargo.
Medical imports.
Electronics.
Private contracts.
Gone.
No alarms.
No witnesses.
No bodies.
Only empty concrete floors.
Someone hadn't robbed Rowan.
Someone had inherited his empire before he was dead.
Across Boston Harbor...
Garrett Hale stood inside the abandoned warehouse.
Stacks of shipping containers surrounded him like steel skyscrapers.
Several captains waited silently.
On the floor lay the Hale family crest, torn from one of Rowan's cargo trucks.
Garrett smiled.
"My cousin still thinks this is about money."
One captain shifted nervously.
"What if he fights?"
Garrett laughed.
"Fight?"
"He can't even stand."
The men around him chuckled.
Garrett's smile slowly disappeared.
"But don't underestimate wounded animals."
"They bite hardest."
Meanwhile...
Piper couldn't stop talking.
"Mom, Uncle Rowan looked sad."
Maeve kept washing dishes beside the industrial sink.
"He's not your uncle."
"But he smiled."
"Maybe."
"I think nobody hugged him."
Maeve stopped scrubbing.
Something about that sentence settled heavily inside her chest.
Nobody hugged him.
Such a simple observation.
Such an unbearable truth.
She remembered the man's eyes.
Cold.
Controlled.
Yet somehow...
Completely exhausted.
She had seen veterans look like that.
People who had survived disasters.
People who had lost entire families.
Not criminals.
Not powerful men.
Broken men.
Suddenly the kitchen manager burst through the swinging doors.
"Maeve!"
She looked up.
"What happened?"
"The owner wants you."
"Now."
Her stomach tightened.
She immediately assumed she was fired.
Piper entering that private banquet had probably cost the hotel an important client.
She removed her apron with trembling hands.
"I'll explain."
"You'd better."
Inside the manager's office...
The hotel owner looked unusually nervous.
Two men in black suits stood behind him.
Neither smiled.
Neither introduced themselves.
The owner cleared his throat.
"Maeve..."
"The gentleman from the private banquet has made a request."
She felt her pulse race.
"...What request?"
The older guard stepped forward.
"Mr. Rowan Hale wishes to see you."
Silence.
Maeve blinked.
"I don't understand."
"He specifically requested both you..."
The guard glanced toward Piper, who was coloring quietly in the corner.
"...and your daughter."
Every instinct screamed at Maeve to refuse.
But before she could answer—
BOOM!
The entire building shook.
Glass exploded inward.
Fire alarms screamed.
Guests began running through the hallways.
Someone shouted—
"There's a bomb!"
The lights flickered.
Smoke rolled beneath the office door.
The two bodyguards instantly drew pistols.
One spoke into his radio.
"Mr. Hale!"
No response.
Only static.
Then—
Three rapid gunshots echoed from somewhere upstairs.
Finley's voice suddenly burst through the radio.
"They're inside!"
"Protect Rowan!"
"We've been betrayed!"
The transmission cut off.
Maeve instinctively pulled Piper behind her.
Outside, terrified guests stampeded toward the exits.
The hotel had become a battlefield in less than ten seconds.
The older bodyguard looked directly at Maeve.
His face had turned pale.
"If they came for Rowan..."
He looked toward Piper.
"...then God help anyone who was seen sitting beside him tonight."
Maeve felt the blood drain from her face.
Because for twenty minutes...
Her little girl had been the only person celebrating Rowan Hale's birthday.
May you like
And somewhere in the hotel...
Someone had definitely noticed.
