CHAPTER 4 – A DEBT WRITTEN IN BLOOD

CHAPTER 4 – A DEBT WRITTEN IN BLOOD
The garage remained silent except for distant sirens.
Finley and the surviving guards searched every entrance, expecting another wave of attackers.
None came.
The sniper had never intended to stay.
The shot had carried a message.
We can reach anyone. Anywhere.
Finley helped Rowan back into his wheelchair.
"You could have been killed."
Rowan brushed the dust from his jacket.
"I've lived with that possibility for years."
"You exposed yourself."
"I protected a child."
The words surprised everyone present.
Even Rowan.
Maeve knelt beside Piper, checking every inch of her body for injuries.
"Does anything hurt?"
Piper shook her head.
"I'm okay."
Then she looked at Rowan with wide, tear-filled eyes.
"He got hurt because of me."
Rowan managed the faintest smile.
"No."
"They were aiming at me."
Maeve finally found her voice.
"Who are these people?"
No one answered immediately.
Instead, Rowan looked directly at her.
"They are my enemies."
"And tonight..."
"They became yours."
Maeve's face turned pale.
"I don't even know you."
"That no longer matters."
Finley received a call through an encrypted earpiece.
His expression darkened.
"Our apartments."
Rowan looked up.
"What about them?"
"They've already searched Maeve's building."
Maeve stared at him.
"My apartment?"
"They arrived less than five minutes ago."
"How do you know?"
"The security camera network."
Finley handed Rowan a tablet.
The footage showed three armed men forcing open the door to Apartment 4C.
Maeve's apartment.
One of them held up a framed photograph of Maeve and Piper.
Another smiled.
Then they began searching every room.
Maeve covered her mouth.
"They're looking for us..."
Rowan nodded once.
"You can't go home."
At that exact moment...
Garrett Hale sat inside a private office overlooking Boston Harbor.
A man entered carrying a folder.
"We found the waitress."
Garrett opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Maeve leaving work.
Maeve picking Piper up from school.
Maeve buying groceries.
Simple moments.
Ordinary life.
Garrett tapped one picture.
"She has no husband?"
"No."
"Family?"
"Parents deceased."
"No siblings."
Garrett leaned back.
"So no one will ask questions."
He closed the folder.
"Bring me the child."
The captain hesitated.
"And the mother?"
Garrett's eyes became ice.
"If she resists..."
"...leave no witnesses."
Back in the garage...
Police sirens echoed outside.
Finley frowned.
"They're early."
Rowan shook his head.
"No."
"They're exactly on time."
He knew the pattern.
Anonymous bomb threat.
Anonymous shooting.
Confused witnesses.
No useful suspects.
Someone had already arranged the official story.
By morning, the news would describe it as a tragic gang-related incident.
Nothing more.
Everything else would disappear.
Just like the evidence.
Rowan turned toward Maeve.
"You have two choices."
She looked exhausted.
"What are they?"
"You walk out those doors."
"You try to rebuild your life."
"And my daughter?"
"They'll find her."
He let the truth settle between them.
"Or..."
"You come with me."
Maeve stared at him in disbelief.
"Into your world?"
"No."
Rowan's voice was quiet.
"Into my protection."
She laughed bitterly through tears.
"Protection?"
"My daughter was almost murdered because she gave you a flower."
Rowan lowered his eyes.
For the first time in years...
The most feared man in Boston looked genuinely ashamed.
"I'm sorry."
The words were almost a whisper.
"I cannot change what happened."
"But I can promise this."
He looked directly at Piper.
"No one will ever point a gun at her again..."
"...without first coming through me."
Before Maeve could answer—
Finley's phone rang again.
He listened for only three seconds before spinning toward Rowan.
"They've breached one of the safe houses."
"What?"
"The traitor knew every location."
A long silence followed.
Then Rowan understood the horrifying truth.
Every safe house.
Every security route.
Every emergency plan.
Someone from his inner circle had surrendered them all.
This was never just a coup.
May you like
It was an execution.
And he had nowhere left to hide.
