Months later, the legal process reached its conclusion.
Marcus had to answer for his actions.
But Nora’s life was no longer centered around him.
That was the greatest change.
She stopped asking:
“Why did he do this?”
And started asking:
“What do I want next?”
One evening, our family gathered for dinner.
The first real family dinner in a long time.
Our parents laughed.
Nora told stories.
Everyone noticed something different.
She was no longer pretending.
She was simply present.
After dinner, she and I stood outside.
“You know,” she said, “I thought losing my old life would destroy me.”
I smiled.
“And?”
She looked up at the stars.
“I think I was only losing the life I thought I had.”
I nodded.
“That’s a big difference.”
She smiled.
“Thank you for coming that night.”
I looked at her.
“You called.”
“I almost didn’t.”
“But you did.”
She squeezed my hand.
“Yeah.”
