Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

The interior of the exclusive club was absolutely breathtaking, filled with dark mahogany wood, crystal chandeliers, and heavy velvet curtains.

Marco completely ignored the wealthy politicians and dangerous criminals mingling in the main room, leading Jenny directly to his private, soundproofed office in the back.

He closed the heavy door behind them, immediately plunging the room into a safe, quiet intimacy that felt incredibly strange to both of them.

Jenny stood nervously in the center of the room, slowly holding out the warm tin foil package like a fragile offering.

“I know a loaf of banana bread doesn't exactly cover the cost of three medical inhalers and a slumlord’s ego,” Jenny said with a small, nervous smile.

“But I desperately needed to thank you for saving my son's life.”

Marco stared at the simple, homemade gift, completely overwhelmed by an emotion he could not even begin to name.

People constantly gave him briefcases full of illegal cash, expensive stolen cars, and massive gold watches to buy his favor.

No one had baked him anything simply out of pure, genuine gratitude since his mother passed away twenty years ago.

He slowly reached out and took the warm package from her hands, his fingers lightly brushing against hers.

“You did not owe me a single thing, Jenny,” Marco whispered, his deep voice thick with heavy, buried emotions.

Before they could speak another word, the heavy office door suddenly opened, and Marco’s fiercely loyal underboss, Dante, walked in.

Dante stopped completely in his tracks, staring in absolute shock at the poorly dressed woman standing inside his boss's highly restricted sanctuary.

“Boss, we have a massive problem,” Dante said urgently, his eyes darting suspiciously toward Jenny.

“Speak,” Marco commanded coldly, completely refusing to ask Jenny to leave the room.

Dante swallowed hard, holding up a sleek, encrypted tablet showing security footage from the street outside.

“The Romanov syndicate has their elite scouts sitting in a black van right across the street,” Dante reported grimly.

“They watched this woman walk up to our front doors, and they watched you personally intervene to bring her inside.”

Marco felt a cold, terrifying dread completely wash over his entire body.

The Romanovs were a brutal, highly violent Russian mafia faction aggressively trying to violently take over Marco’s downtown territory.

They had been desperately searching for a single weakness in Marco’s impenetrable armor for over two years.

And Marco had just publicly displayed a protective, emotional connection to a completely defenseless mother.

“They know I care about you now,” Marco said quietly, turning back to face a completely confused Jenny.

“Which means you and your son are in absolute, immediate danger.”

Jenny’s eyes widened in sheer terror, instantly realizing that her innocent attempt to say thank you had just dragged her directly into a deadly mob war.
