Chapter 1

The chandeliers of the Hale Ballroom threw gold light over three hundred guests.

Champagne glasses clinked. A string quartet played somewhere near the marble staircase.

In the center of it all stood a black stallion, muscles rippling under the light, nostrils flaring at every camera flash.

Beside him stood Victor Hale, billionaire horse breeder, in a tuxedo that cost more than most people’s cars.

“This horse has thrown four professional riders in six months,” Victor announced, raising his champagne glass. “Tonight, I’m offering one million dollars to anyone who can ride him. Sixty seconds. That’s all it takes.”

The crowd murmured.

A woman near the bar laughed nervously. “Is he serious?”

“He’s always serious about money,” her husband muttered.

Two riders had already tried earlier that evening. One walked away with a limp. The other refused to speak to reporters, his arm in a sling.

Nobody else stepped forward.

The horse snorted and stamped, and the guests near the front backed up half a step.

Then, from the entrance, a small voice cut through the noise.

“I’ll do it.”

Every head turned.

A little girl stood just inside the doorway. She wore a plain gray dress and shoes with a hole starting in one toe. She couldn’t have been more than seven years old.

Laughter rippled through the crowd.

“Someone get this kid’s parents,” a man called out, still chuckling.

Victor’s smile was thin. “This isn’t a game, sweetheart.”

The girl didn’t blink. “I know.”

She started walking toward the horse.

A security guard moved to intercept her, but Victor lifted two fingers. “Let her learn her lesson.”

The horse reared, front hooves slicing the air. Someone screamed. A tray of champagne glasses crashed to the floor.

The girl kept walking.

Ten feet. Five feet. Two.

She reached up and pressed her small hand flat against the stallion’s forehead.

The horse froze mid-breath.

The wildness drained out of his eyes like a switch had been flipped.

Slowly, impossibly, the massive animal lowered his head. Then he bent both front legs.

He bowed to her.

Silence swallowed the ballroom whole.
