Chapter 3

The girl opened the locket with steady fingers. Inside, tucked where a photograph should have been, sat a tiny memory card.

“What is that?” someone in the crowd asked.

“My father recorded everything,” the girl said. “Every transfer. Every meeting. Every threat.”

Above the dance floor, the massive projection screens Victor had installed for his own promotional videos flickered on.

Nobody had touched a remote.

A grainy video began to play. Victor’s own face filled the screen, younger, angrier, standing in what looked like a stable office.

His recorded voice rang out across the ballroom.

“If he talks, make sure he disappears. I don’t care how.”

The crowd erupted.

Three of Victor’s business partners near the bar set down their drinks and walked briskly toward the exit.

Uniformed police officers, several of whom had been quietly working security for the gala, began moving through the crowd toward Victor.

His knees buckled. “It’s not what it looks like! That was taken out of context!”

Nobody was listening anymore.

The girl knelt beside the horse and pressed her forehead to his.

“You kept your promise,” she whispered.

The horse exhaled and rested his head against her small shoulder.

As officers pulled Victor’s hands behind his back, one of them turned to the girl.

“How did you know the horse would remember you after all these years?”

She wiped her eyes and smiled.

“Because my father raised him. And horses never forget who loves them.”

The ballroom stayed silent, three hundred wealthy strangers watching a seven-year-old girl finally bring her father home.
