Chapter 8 - The Vault and the Legacy

A countdown appeared.

“10 minutes until evidence destruction.”

Victor opened a second camera feed. Inside the vault, a thin older woman sat bound to a chair. Sebastian stopped breathing.

“Mother.

” Elena Vale lifted her face.

“Do not bring him.”

She warned Kira.

“Victor does not need Sebastian’s blood.”

Her eyes shifted toward Ruth.

“He needs hers.”

Ruth’s palm began glowing where she had touched the ledger.

A tracker beneath her skin activated. The estate map revealed her location. Armed men appeared in the tunnels moving toward the room.

May locked the outer doors. They will breach them in 4 minutes. Kira turned to Ruth.

What is inside your hand? The final vault key.

The console displayed one last instruction. To restore the trust, the keeper must surrender her blood before midnight. Ruth lifted the knife.

Now you understand why I came tonight. She placed the blade against her wrist and looked at Kira. I was never here to save my name.

Sebastian moved toward her immediately. The armed men struck the outer door. Ruth tightened her grip.

I came to give you yours.

The knife touched Ruth’s wrist as the armed men struck the outer door again.

Sebastian crossed the room in two steps and caught her hand. No. Ruth tried to pull away.

The trust requires the keeper’s blood.

It requires surrender, Kira said, staring at the wording on the console. It does not say death.

Another blow bent the steel door inward. May Hollis moved beside the trustees.

Then we test the language before Victor’s men reach us.

Ruth’s glowing palm pulsed brighter.

Beneath her skin, the tracker formed a thin circle around an older surgical scar. Kira took the knife from her. You came here expecting to sacrifice yourself because everyone taught you that protecting us meant disappearing.

Ruth’s eyes filled.

I already failed Elena once. Then stay alive long enough to tell the truth. Sebastian examined the console.

A narrow reservoir sat beneath the final instruction marked with a single drop. One drop, he said. That may be all it needs.

The trustees nodded. Ruth pressed the tip of her finger to the blade.

A bead of blood fell into the reservoir. The console flashed.

Keeper blood accepted. Final key requires living testimony. Ruth laughed through her tears.

Victor had counted on her believing the worst interpretation. The outer door burst open.

Three armed men entered, but the workers trustees had already activated the room’s original defense system.

Brass panels opened along the walls, releasing thick curtains of white fire retardant foam. The men lost their footing. Security officers loyal to May rushed from a hidden passage and disarmed them.

Victor’s countdown continued.

8 minutes. Kira lifted the baby bracelet from the console. We go to the vault.

Sebastian reached for her hand. Together.

Ruth shook her head. Victor asked for Kira because he believes she is the firstborn. Is she?

Ruth looked toward the live image of Elena. I never knew.

Victor changed the bracelets before I reached the delivery room. Elena spoke weakly through the monitor.

The bracelet is not the proof. Victor struck the camera controls. Her image vanished.

May opened the tunnel map. The vault is beneath the old chapel.

Two routes. The main corridor is trapped, but the laundry shaft reaches the west wall. Ruth, Kira, Sebastian, and May entered the shaft while the other trustees stayed behind to protect the workers archive.

They descended through dust and narrow iron ladders until the stone walls began trembling with the vault’s destruction system.

At the bottom, they found a locked grate. Sebastian placed his palm against it.

Access denied. Kira tried next.

Access denied. Ruth touched it. Keeper verified.

The great opened. Victor waited beyond it with a pistol aimed at Elena.

The older woman sat bound beside a furnace. Despite her gray hair and frail body, Sebastian recognized the shape of her face from every portrait hidden after his childhood. His voice broke.

Mother. Elena looked at him for a long moment. You survived.

May you like

Victor smiled. A reunion after 30 years. Beautiful.

Now give me Ruth’s hand and the bracelet.
