Chapter 4 - The Real Reasons Emerge
I asked Ashley why she had listed her account.
She started with the answer I’d expected. She said everything had been chaotic. She claimed she planned to hold the money temporarily, then move it where it belonged after the claim was settled.
I asked why she hadn’t told me.
She said I would have overreacted.
I asked why she needed control of it at all.
Her answer changed again.
She said she had spent money helping during Noah’s recovery. Gas. Food. Time away from work. Things she had never asked me to reimburse.
Some of that may even have been true.
But it didn’t explain a forged signature, and it didn’t explain why she had been willing to let me keep paying for Emma’s camps while she quietly treated money belonging to Noah as something she could manage for herself.
Then she said the part I think she’d been trying not to say.
“I was going to put it back.”
Emma looked at her.
So did I.
You don’t promise to put something back unless you already understand it isn’t yours.
Ashley began talking faster. She said her divorce had left her short. She said summer programs mattered to Emma. She said she had always intended to make everything right before anyone noticed.
The birthday-party argument suddenly looked different.
When I’d canceled the ski trip and dance camp, Ashley hadn’t only heard that I was setting a boundary. She had heard that the person who had been absorbing her financial pressure was finally closing the door.
Then the certified letter appeared the next morning.
No wonder she had watched it like that.

She hadn’t come to my house expecting the insurance issue. She had come believing the iPad would force me into another argument about whether I was cruel enough to take something from a child.
Instead, the letter put her own choices on the porch between us.
