Chapter 6 - Protecting Noah
Ashley tried one more angle. She said an investigation into the accident would humiliate Emma. She said people would treat her like a dangerous child. She said I was willing to damage a nine-year-old over something that couldn’t be undone.
That was the first time I understood the choice in front of me clearly.
Accountability didn’t require me to turn Emma into a villain.
It required me to stop letting Ashley erase Noah to protect her.
I told Emma I wasn’t going to yell at her about the bicycle. I also told her I wasn’t going to pretend it hadn’t happened.
She wiped her face with her sleeve.
“Am I still in trouble for the cake?” she asked.
“Yes.”
It was such a child-sized question in the middle of an adult-sized mess that my anger broke around the edges.
“But being in trouble doesn’t mean everybody hates you,” I said. “It means you tell the truth, apologize, and accept that somebody might need space from you.”
Ashley looked furious.
Emma looked relieved.
That difference stayed with me.
Before they left, Emma picked up the iPad from the porch and brought it inside. She placed the sealed box on the kitchen counter instead of carrying it back to the car.
“I don’t want Mom to use this to make you say yes,” she said.
Ashley told her to pick it up.
Emma shook her head.

It was the first time I had seen her refuse her mother’s version of what family loyalty was supposed to look like.
She left the box there.
