Chapter 14 - The Return of the Old KitchenOn the evening before our wedding, Luca and I hosted a private family dinner at Trattoria DeLuca & Reed on Taylor Street.

There were no bodyguards checking identification at the door. No armed sentries watching from the alleyway.

The thirty guests seated around the long wooden tables were the people who truly represented the soul of our lives:

My father, walking comfortably with a carved wooden cane, sitting beside Marco Santori and his family.

Mrs. Gable and the senior household staff, dressed in their finest holiday clothes, sharing platters of homemade gnocchi and roasted lamb.

The line cooks, dishwashers, and waitstaff from the restaurant, sitting as honored guests alongside Assistant US Attorney Marcus Vance and senior union leaders from the docks.

At the head of the table sat Luca, looking more relaxed and handsome than I had ever seen him.

He stood up, tapping his water glass with a silver fork to draw our attention.

The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.

“Forty years ago,” Luca began, his deep baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the warm, brick-lined room, “this building was opened by two men who believed that loyalty was not a strategy, but a sacred covenant. They believed that when you break bread with people, you take responsibility for their safety, their dignity, and their future.”

He looked directly at me, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made my heart overflow.

“For a long time, I forgot that lesson. I thought power was an iron wall. I thought alliances were built on balance sheets and political treaties.”

He walked around the table, stopping beside my chair, extending his hand to lift me to my feet.

“Emma reminded me that real power is the courage to speak the truth when everyone else is silent. She reminded me of who my father was, and who I wanted to be.”

He raised his glass high into the air.

“To Taylor Street. To the DeLuca and Moretti families. And to the woman who brought us home.”

The entire room erupted into thunderous, joyous applause that shook the wine glasses on the tables:

“To Emma! To Luca! Viva la famiglia!”

My father wiped tears of pure joy from his eyes, while Marco clapped Luca on the back with a booming laugh.

Luca pulled me close, his lips meeting mine in a gentle, lingering kiss that sealed our family's redemption forever.
