Chapter 5 - The Ledger Behind the WainscotingBy 1:30 AM, the mansion above us had grown deathly still, but the cellar was buzzing with cold, forensic activity.

Dante had brought down the security hard drives from Pier 14, along with the encrypted laptop seized from Vanessa’s private suite on the third floor.

On the screen, columns of shipping manifests and customs clearance codes flickered in rapid succession.

Marco leaned over the display, pointing with a silver pen.

“Look at these container serial numbers, Luca,” Marco noted, his voice tightening with professional anger. “These twelve freight containers were cleared through the Port of Montreal two weeks ago under Crestline Logistics. They were listed as carrying Italian canned San Marzano tomatoes for our downtown pizzerias.”

“And what was actually inside?” Luca asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Military-grade communication jammers and encrypted satellite transceivers,” Dante answered, scrolling through the customs x-ray images. “The exact hardware used by the cartel in Jalisco to coordinate offshore smuggling routes. Salvatore Bellini was using our restaurant distribution network to establish an untraceable communications corridor across the entire Midwest.”

Luca didn’t swear. He didn’t raise his voice.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his personal phone, and dialed a ten-digit number with a Montreal area code.

He put the call on speaker.

After three rings, a deep, raspy voice answered:

“Moretti. I was expecting a call from my daughter to confirm the engagement toasts went through.”

Don Salvatore Bellini Senior. The patriarch of the northern family.

“Your daughter is currently sitting in my private holding suite on the Gold Coast, Salvatore,” Luca said, his voice flat as a frozen lake.

A long, suffocating pause hung on the line. The faint hum of an idling engine could be heard on the other end.

“Luca... my boy. What is the meaning of this? Has Vanessa done something to displease you?”

“Vanessa altered my catering numbers tonight to frame Marco Santori,” Luca replied, each word dropping like an iron weight. “She tried to force a four-thousand-dollar kickback through your son’s logistics front. And she was preparing to run twelve containers of cartel transceivers through my Taylor Street distribution hub.”

“Luca, listen to me!” Salvatore’s voice suddenly cracked with frantic, cornered desperation. “The Jalisco cartel was putting pressure on our northern routes! We needed your maritime corridors to keep our operations liquid! We are family now! We were about to merge our empires!”

“We were never family, Salvatore,” Luca whispered into the receiver. “You took my father’s generosity forty years ago and turned it into poison. The engagement is terminated. The northern border contracts are canceled. And within thirty minutes, every container at Pier 14 will be in the custody of the United States Attorney’s Office.”

“Moretti! You can’t go to the feds! That breaks the sacred charter of the Commission!”

“I didn't break the charter, Salvatore,” Luca replied coldly. “You broke it the moment you tried to use my father’s bread trucks to smuggle contraband.”

Luca ended the call with a single tap.

He handed the phone to Dante.

“Call Assistant US Attorney Marcus Vance. Hand over the container serial numbers and the Crestline manifests. Tell him the Moretti organization is providing full commercial cooperation.”

Dante nodded once. “And Miss Bellini, boss?”

Luca looked toward the stone staircase leading to the upper floors.

“Put her in a private town car. Send her back to her father’s estate in Lake Forest with two suitcases. If she ever steps foot in Cook County again, my men will not bother asking questions.”
