Chapter 7 - A Mother’s Stolen Olive OilBy 5:00 AM, the last of the guests had been escorted to their limousines, leaving the grand mansion peaceful, clean, and filled with the pale gray light of pre-dawn.

Marco had gone home to his family in Oak Park, holding his new partnership contracts, while Dante’s security teams finalized the perimeter sweeps.

In the private sunroom on the second floor, a small brick fireplace was crackling with birch logs, driving away the autumn chill that rolled off Lake Michigan.

I sat on the velvet chaise lounge, wrapped in a warm wool throw, holding a steaming mug of hot tea that Mrs. Gable had prepared for me before going to sleep.

My body was exhausted, my muscles aching from eighteen hours of physical and emotional tension, but my mind was completely, wonderfully clear.

Soft footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor.

Luca walked into the sunroom.

He had removed his jacket and tie, wearing an open-collared black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. In his hand, he carried an antique, dust-covered green glass bottle with a faded paper label written in Italian:

Olio d'Oliva DeLuca — Raccolto 1984.

He sat down on the leather armchair opposite me, setting the bottle onto the low cherrywood table between us.

“My father kept this bottle in his private safe for forty years,” Luca said softly, his deep voice stripping away the terrifying armor of the mafia sovereign. “He told me that when your grandfather brought this oil over from Italy, he gave half the crate to our family as a wedding gift. He said that a home that had good oil and honest bread would never run out of blessings.”

I looked at the faded label, my heart swelling with profound, bittersweet emotion.

“My mother kept a bottle just like this on our kitchen mantel,” I whispered, tears pricking my eyes. “Even when the restaurant was struggling, even when the bills were piling up, she never opened it. She said it was a reminder of where we came from.”

Luca reached out, taking my hand into his large, warm palm.

His touch was steady, protective, and filled with a reverent gentleness that made my heart race against my ribs.

“Your mother was right, Emma,” he murmured, his dark gray eyes holding mine with an intensity that took my breath away. “I spent ten years building a fortress of concrete, steel, and corporate alliances because I thought power was the only thing that could keep my father’s memory safe. I convinced myself that an alliance with a family like the Bellinis was the price I had to pay to protect my businesses.”

He leaned forward, his thumb gently caressing the back of my hand.

“And then you stood up in front of thirty-two powerful people and spoke three words in Italian.”

A faint, radiant smile touched my lips. “L'ho sentita dire esattamente quello che sto dicendo.”

Luca let out a soft, deep laugh—a breathtaking sound that made his handsome face look ten years younger.

“You didn't hesitate, Emma. You knew you could lose your paycheck. You knew Vanessa could have had you blacklisted. But you chose to protect a man you barely knew because you couldn't stand by and watch an innocent person take the blame.”

“Marco didn't deserve that, Luca,” I said softly. “Nobody deserves to be treated like that.”

“No,” Luca agreed, his voice dropping into a tender, intimate murmur. “They don't. And starting today, you will never have to worry about a paycheck, a mortgage, or your father’s physical therapy ever again.”
