Chapter 2 - The Billionaire Brothers Return

She packed one suitcase.
Her clothes.
Her laptop.
Her passport.
Her mother’s silver bracelet.
The ultrasound photograph.
Nothing Luca had bought for her.
Nothing that required gratitude.
Forty-three minutes later she was sitting in the back of a black SUV watching the gates of the Marcelli estate disappear behind falling snow.
She did not cry until the driver asked where she wanted to go.
Because Claire suddenly realized she had nowhere.
Her marriage had swallowed her geography slowly.
The mansion was Luca’s.
Their lake house was Luca’s.
The apartment downtown had Marcelli security.
Even the hotel she usually used for business conferences belonged to a man who owed Luca money.
“Mrs. Marcelli?”
Claire looked through the windshield.
“Take me to the Hawthorne on West Cedar.”
The driver hesitated.
Luca had not chosen it.
That was precisely the point.
“West Cedar,” she repeated.
“Yes, ma’am.”
At the hotel, Claire checked in under the name she had never legally surrendered.
Claire Bennett.
Seeing it printed on the receipt nearly made her cry again.
She went upstairs.
Locked the door.
Placed the ultrasound photograph on the nightstand.
Then she sat on the edge of the bed and finally let herself shake.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered to her daughter.
The baby moved.
Claire placed both hands over her stomach.
“I’m so sorry.”
She stayed like that until almost two in the morning.
Then headlights moved slowly across the curtains.
Claire froze.
A sedan had stopped across the street.
Black.
Engine running.
Lights off.
She watched for five minutes.
Ten.
Nobody got out.
At 2:21 a.m., the car drove away.
Claire barely slept.
The next morning she changed hotels without telling anyone.
She used cash.
She took a cab, switched to another cab halfway there, then checked into a smaller hotel near River North.
At 4:10 that afternoon, she looked through the curtains.
The same black sedan was across the street.
Claire’s fear changed shape.
Luca had thrown her out.
Men who wanted their wives gone did not secretly follow them through Chicago.
Unless Luca was more controlling than she had ever imagined......???
Or unless the car did not belong to Luca.
She sat at the hotel desk and opened an email account she had not used in eight years.
There was only one address in the contacts.
She typed a single sentence.
I need to know whether you still watch this account.
She hit send.
Eleven minutes later her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Claire answered.
A man’s voice said, “Which hotel?”
Her throat closed.
“Ethan?”
“Which hotel, Claire?”
Eight years.
Eight years without speaking to her oldest brother.
And that was all he said.
She gave him the name.
“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”
The call ended.
Fourteen minutes later someone knocked.
Claire opened the door.
Ethan Bennett stood in the hallway.
He was forty-one now, taller than she remembered somehow, with silver at his temples and a charcoal coat that looked deceptively ordinary until you understood that Ethan had spent the last decade building Northstar Infrastructure into a global empire worth billions.
Behind him stood Cole.
Cole took one look at Claire’s pregnant belly and went white.
Then furious.
“I’m going to bury him.”
Claire almost smiled despite everything.
Cole had not changed.
At thirty-seven he owned Arden Freight Systems, controlled shipping contracts on three continents, and still reacted to family crises like a man preparing to personally fight a hurricane.
“No.”
“Claire—”
“No.”
“He threw you out while you’re seven months pregnant.”
“I noticed.”
“He put his mistress in your seat.”
“How do you know that?”
Silence.
Claire looked at Ethan.
Then Cole.
“You’ve been watching me.”
Ethan did not insult her by lying.
“From a distance.”
“For eight years?”
“Not continuously.”
Cole muttered, “Close enough.”
May you like
Claire stepped back.
“Come inside.”
