Chapter 4 - One Sin as a ShieldBy sunrise, the war around Claire’s unborn daughter finally had a shape.

It was not a love triangle.
That was merely the doorway.
Vanessa Hale had been Luca’s mistress for six months before Claire became pregnant.
Ethan’s people proved it through an apartment leased by a shell company Luca quietly controlled.
Claire read the report twice.
She had thought knowing would make the betrayal cleaner.
Instead it made it uglier.
Luca had not cheated because of Dominic.
He had cheated because he wanted to.
That mattered.
Whatever explanation came later could not erase it.
But Vanessa’s relationship with Dominic began after Claire’s ultrasound.
Phone records showed repeated contact.
Meetings multiplied.
Money moved.
Daniel Ross was reassigned nine days after doctors confirmed Claire was carrying a daughter.
The man who replaced him had once worked for a company controlled by Dominic.
Then came the photograph.
Claire woke at 5:17 the third morning to a text from an unknown number.
The picture had been taken through the hotel window.
Claire asleep.
Pregnant belly visible beneath the blanket.
Below it were seven words.
The baby still belongs to Marcelli blood.
Claire was out of bed before she consciously understood why.
She moved away from the window.
Called Ethan.
He answered immediately.
“I got a picture.”
“I’m coming.”
Forty seconds later, he entered through the connecting door.
Cole came behind him.
Neither man spoke when Claire showed them the phone.
Ethan’s face became frighteningly calm.
“We move now.”
“No.”
Cole stared at her.
“Claire.”
“If we run every time they show us they can find us, they control the board.”
“You are not a board piece.”
“Exactly.”
Cole rubbed both hands over his face.
“I’m trying very hard to respect the whole independent-woman-with-her-own-strategy thing, but somebody just photographed you sleeping.”
“And that means we increase security.”
“It means we put you in a fortress.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
He knew what she was asking.
“I own a private townhouse in the Gold Coast,” he said. “Secured garage. Interior courtyard. Windows shielded from street sightlines.”
Cole pointed at him.
“See? Fortress.”
Claire sighed.
“Fine.”
Four hours later they moved.
The investigation continued.
And with each document Claire read, a more disturbing truth emerged.
Luca knew Dominic was moving against him.
Quietly, Luca had been shifting trusted people closer to the family’s legitimate financial operations.
He had tightened control of accounts.
Changed authorization structures.
Removed Dominic’s allies from sensitive positions without publicly confronting them.
“He’s pretending to be distracted,” Claire said.
Ethan nodded.
“Looks that way.”
“Vanessa makes him look weak.”
“Yes.”
“The affair damages his credibility.”
“Yes.”
“And throwing me out makes it look like Vanessa has won.”
Cole leaned against the kitchen counter.
“Please don’t turn this into Luca secretly being a heroic genius.”
Claire glared at him.
“He is neither heroic nor a genius.”
“Good.”
“He’s a cheating husband who may also have been trying to stop someone from murdering our daughter.”
Cole’s expression hardened.
“And those things can both be true.”
“Yes.”
He hated that answer.
So did Claire.
The next breakthrough came from Daniel Ross.
Ethan arranged a private visit.
Daniel looked terrible.
His left arm was immobilized. Bruising still discolored his jaw.
When Claire entered his hospital room, his eyes widened.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“Apparently people keep saying that to me.”
“Mrs. Marcelli—”
“Claire.”
He swallowed.
She sat beside the bed.
“Did Luca remove you from my security?”
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
Claire caught it.
“Don’t look at my brother. Look at me.”
Daniel did.
“No.”
Claire’s heart accelerated.
“Who did?”
“I got orders through Operations.”
“Signed by?”
“Derek Malloy.”
Dominic’s man.
“Did Luca know?”
“I tried to tell him.”
“What happened?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Someone got to me first.”
Claire leaned back.
The room felt cold.
“What was Luca trying to do?”
Daniel hesitated.
“That’s his story to tell.”
“I’m carrying the child people broke your bones over.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“He was trying to make you look worthless to them.”
Claire went still.
“What?”
“He found out there was discussion about eliminating the succession problem.”
Ethan’s expression darkened.
Daniel continued.
“He knew if he openly sent you away under protection, Dominic would understand you mattered. If he publicly rejected you, publicly chose Vanessa…”
Claire’s stomach turned.
“They’d think my baby had no future claim.”
“That was the idea.”
Claire stood.
“So he humiliated me.”
Daniel said nothing.
“He used his affair as camouflage.”
“Yes.”
“An affair he was already having.”
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.”
There it was.
The terrible center.
Luca had betrayed her.
Then when danger came, he had used the betrayal to protect her.
One sin became a shield against another.
Claire felt suddenly exhausted.
“When did he discover the threat?”
“Six days before the dinner.”
“Six days.”
She laughed once, bitterly.
“He had six days to tell me.”
“He believed your reaction needed to be genuine.”
“My reaction was genuine.”
“I know.”
“He could have trusted me.”
Daniel’s eyes softened.
May you like
“I know.”
Claire walked out.
