Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the LibraryThat night she called Luca.

It was the first time they had spoken since the dining room.
He answered after one ring.
“Claire.”
“Tomorrow. Ten a.m. Ethan’s townhouse.”
Silence.
“How did you—”
“Ten.”
“I’ll be there.”
She hung up.
Luca arrived at 9:57.
Cole opened the door.
The two men stared at each other.
Cole was taller by an inch.
Luca was more dangerous by reputation.
Neither mattered inside Ethan Bennett’s house.
“You hurt her again,” Cole said, “and all those beautiful legitimate companies you spent twenty years cleaning up are going to discover what a hostile credit environment feels like.”
Luca looked at him.
“I understand.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Cole.”
Claire stood at the end of the hallway.
Her husband looked at her.
For the first time in four years, she saw Luca enter a room where he controlled absolutely nothing.
“Come in.”
They sat across from each other in Ethan’s library.
Claire kept the door open.
Her brothers were nearby.
Not because she required them to speak for her.
Because this time she chose who stood behind her.
“Did you know Dominic planned to target our daughter?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Six days before the dinner.”
“Did you believe throwing me out would protect us?”
“Yes.”
“Did you order surveillance after I left?”
“Yes.”
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“So one of the cars was yours.”
“One was.”
“The second?”
“No.”
She believed him.
That frightened her more.
“Did you know Daniel was removed from my detail?”
“Not until after.”
“Did you know Vanessa was working with Dominic?”
“Not at first.”
“When did you know?”
“The night before the dinner.”
Claire stared at him.
“And you still put her in my chair.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because by then I needed Dominic to believe I had chosen her completely.”
Claire stood.
“You chose her long before Dominic asked you to.”
Luca closed his eyes.
Just for a second.
“Claire—”
“No. This is the part you don’t get to turn into strategy.”
His eyes opened.
“You slept with her before any threat existed.”
“Yes.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“You made me question myself.”
“Yes.”
“You let me ask you directly whether you were sleeping with her and refused to answer.”
“Yes.”
“And then when the consequences of your own affair became useful, you turned my humiliation into a tactical advantage.”
Luca’s face looked older than it had a week earlier.
“Yes.”
Claire’s eyes burned.
“Was she worth our baby?”
His voice broke on the answer.
“No.”
Claire swallowed.
“You said yes.”
“I needed everyone at that table to believe it.”
“I believed it.”
“I know.”
“You needed my pain to be convincing.”
“Yes.”
“You never considered trusting me enough to act.”
“I considered it.”
“And?”
“I was afraid.”
That stopped her.
Luca Marcelli did not say those words.
Not about anything.
“What?”
“I was afraid you would refuse to leave.”
“I might have.”
“I was afraid you would decide we could fight it together.”
“We might have.”
“I was afraid you would be brave.”
Claire stared at him.
“That is the most insulting compliment anyone has ever given me.”
“I know.”
“No, Luca. You were afraid I would make a decision you didn’t like.”
His silence answered.
Claire shook her head.
“That’s what all of you do.”
“All of us?”
“You. Ethan. Cole. Powerful men deciding that love gives them permission to choose the shape of my life.”
Luca lowered his eyes.
Claire’s hand moved instinctively to her stomach.
“When our daughter is born, I will not teach her that control is love just because the controlling person is scared.”
Luca’s face tightened.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
“I do want to protect both of you.”
“You don’t get to protect me by lying to me anymore.”
“What do you want?”
Claire looked at him.
That question.
Finally.
“What do you want?”
Not what will you allow.
Not what should happen.
What do you want?
Claire took a breath.
“I want every piece of evidence you have against Dominic and Vanessa.”
Luca’s eyebrows lifted.
“No.”
Claire almost smiled.
“There he is.”
“Claire, some of that material—”
“Then leave.”
He stopped.
“You asked what I wanted.”
She stepped closer.
“You threw me out because you thought I was safer outside your world. Fine. Now I am outside it. Which means you don’t command me.”
Luca looked toward the open door.
Ethan was standing there.
Cole beside him.
Two billionaire brothers.
Two men Luca had once privately dismissed as businessmen with expensive toys and no understanding of his world.
Now both stood behind Claire without saying a word.
Luca finally understood the mistake everyone had made.
Claire had never been powerful because she married him.
She had simply stopped using the power she already had.
“What are you planning?” Luca asked.
May you like
Claire held his gaze.
“I’m going back to your dining room.”
