Chapter 12 - THE SECOND KEY

Federal investigators reopened the file surrounding Clarissa Shaw’s disappearance.

The missing investigator’s name was Aaron Bell.

He had vanished three years earlier.

No body.

No resignation.

No retirement records.

Nothing.

Clara had assumed Nicholas found him.

Then an escrow attorney revealed something.

Aaron had accessed the authentication key six months earlier.

Clara stared.

“He’s alive.”

“Possibly.”

“Why didn’t he contact me?”

The attorney slid over a sealed letter.

“Because he believed contact would expose you.”

The letter was dated seven months earlier.

Clarissa,

If this reaches you, Nicholas is no longer watching for you. He is watching for the key. Do not surface for money. Surface only when Toby can survive without disappearing again.

Clara read the sentence twice.

Aaron knew about Toby’s heart.

Then:

The second key was never mine. I was only custodian.

Dominic leaned forward.

“Whose?”

Clara continued reading.

Daniel Shaw created it.

Her husband.

Her dead husband.

Her hands shook.

Daniel had anticipated that Clara might be forced underground.

So he split the key.

One half with federal custody.

One half hidden somewhere only Clara could eventually recognize.

Where?

The letter contained a clue.

The first place Toby learned what home meant.

Clara closed her eyes.

Their old apartment?

Daniel’s parents’ house?

The hospital?

Then she remembered.

A wooden recipe box.

Daniel used it to hold photographs because Toby constantly removed them from frames.

When Toby was a toddler, Daniel would point to each picture and ask:

“Who’s that?”

“Mom.”

“Who’s that?”

“Dad.”

“And where are we?”

Toby always answered:

“Home.”

The recipe box had burned in the warehouse fire.

Or so Clara believed.

Federal evidence storage had recovered several items from their apartment before the staged disappearance.

The box was one.

Inside were photographs.

Nothing digital.

Nothing valuable.

Then an agent removed the false wooden base.

A metal token dropped out.

Authentication key two.

Five years.

Daniel had remained part of the plan after death.

Clara covered her face.

Dominic did not touch her.

He waited.

Eventually she whispered:

“He knew I might have to do this without him.”

“Yes.”

“I hate that he was right.”

“I know.”

With both keys recovered, the complete financial archive could finally be opened.

Nicholas had believed it contained only money.

He had been wrong.

Daniel had hidden something else inside.

A recorded statement.

And when Clara heard her husband’s voice for the first time in five years—

she nearly stopped breathing.
