Chapter 7 - THE FORTY-TWO MILLION

The money was unwound slowly.

Painfully.

Some went back to pension accounts Nicholas had used.

Some to relief funds.

Some to people whose names had been attached to shell entities without their knowledge.

Victims received restitution where courts allowed it.

The remainder funded a cardiac-care assistance program.

Dominic’s attorneys proposed naming it after Clara.

“No.”

“Daniel?” one asked.

“No.”

“Toby?”

“Absolutely not.”

Dominic watched her.

“Why?”

Clara looked at him.

“Because families shouldn’t have to perform gratitude for help.”

Silence.

She continued.

“No photographs on walls.”

“No donor dinners.”

“No testimonials required.”

“No publicity in exchange for treatment.”

“And no financial arrangement that gives anyone control over what happens afterward.”

Dominic nodded.

His attorney blinked.

“That is unusually specific.”

Clara’s expression didn’t change.

“Experience usually is.”

Dominic signed the provision.

No argument.

Toby recovered slowly.

For two weeks, walking from bed to window exhausted him.

For another month, he slept with one hand pressed against the bandage on his chest.

Clara remained through every difficult breath.

Dominic visited.

He brought no flowers.

No balloon.

No giant stuffed animal that forced Toby to perform happiness.

The first time, he brought a chessboard.

Toby frowned.

“Do you know how to play?”

“Yes.”

“Are you good?”

“Usually.”

Toby looked at Clara.

“Mom says people who say ‘usually’ mean yes but don’t want to sound rude.”

Dominic glanced at her.

“Your mother notices things.”

“She throws knives too.”

“I noticed.”

On the fourth visit, Toby beat him.

Dominic claimed distraction.

Toby called it losing.

Clara watched them from the hospital window.

For the first time, she noticed something she had deliberately refused to see.

Dominic was gentler with children than adults.

Not falsely sweet.

Just careful.

He never touched Toby without invitation.

Never talked over him.

Never promised things he could not guarantee.

That made Clara more nervous than his money ever had.

Because gratitude was easy to identify.

Attraction was not.

So when Toby finally came home—

Clara made a decision.

She returned to the Rusty Skillet.

Not because she needed the job.

May you like

Because there was one thing she wanted to leave behind.

Her apron.
