Chapter 5 - NICHOLAS

Nobody shouted.

That made it worse.

Nicholas stopped beneath the glowing EXIT sign.

His eyes went directly to the tracking device in Dominic’s hand.

“You always were observant.”

Dominic stepped in front of Clara.

“You brought this into a children’s hospital.”

“I came to recover what belongs to us.”

“You mean what you stole.”

Nicholas smiled.

“So she told you.”

“Enough.”

Nicholas looked past Dominic.

“Clarissa.”

Clara’s jaw tightened.

“Clara is the costume.”

Behind the recovery doors, a monitor sounded twice.

Clara’s hand closed around the strap of her canvas duffel.

Nicholas noticed.

“Don’t.”

His voice remained calm.

“Your son is one hallway away. You know better than anybody what fear makes people do.”

Clara looked at him.

“Yes.”

Nicholas’s smile returned.

“It makes people obey.”

“Some people.”

She unzipped the bag.

“And others?”

Clara’s hand disappeared inside.

“It makes us stop running.”

Nicholas reached beneath his jacket.

Clara moved first.

The cleaver flashed across the corridor.

Not toward Nicholas.

Toward the wall.

The blade struck beside the fire-alarm station.

Its handle slammed the switch.

Alarms erupted.

Red lights flashed.

Automatic doors released.

Sprinklers burst overhead.

Hospital staff moved according to emergency protocol.

Security flooded elevators and stairwells.

The two men beside Nicholas hesitated.

Dominic did not.

He caught Nicholas’s wrist before whatever he carried cleared his coat.

Turned him hard against the wall.

One maintenance-clad man ran.

The other lifted both hands when four hospital security officers appeared.

Within seconds the corridor filled with witnesses.

Water.

Cameras.

Nurses.

Patients’ families.

Clara had given Nicholas the one environment his plan could not survive.

Public attention.

Security restrained him.

Nicholas stared at Clara.

“You planned this?”

She pulled the cleaver free from the wall and set it on the floor.

“No.”

Water ran down her face.

“I noticed the alarm.”

Dominic looked at her.

The memory of a smile returned.

This time, it stayed.

Then Clara heard something through the recovery doors.

Toby crying.

Everything else disappeared.

She turned toward him.

Dominic looked at Nicholas.

Five years earlier, this betrayal would have ended privately.

A body.

A missing car.

A story nobody questioned.

But when Dominic followed Clara toward the recovery ward instead of staying with Nicholas—

he made the first decision that would eventually destroy the empire everyone thought he was trying to protect.
