Chapter 28

Do not trust the death certificate without the original file.

And please, if there is anything decent left between the man I met years ago and the man they say you became, help my children know they were loved.

My hands had gone numb.

Elise looked at me, all color drained from her face.

Maya whispered, “What death certificate?”

But I could not answer.

Because beneath Evan’s message, tucked into the fold, was a photograph.

A woman stood on a beach with windblown hair and a baby in each arm.

Anna.

The twins’ mother.

On the back, written in the same hurried hand, was a date from only eight months ago.

Eight months ago.

Not years.

Not when the twins were babies.

Eight months ago, Anna Bennett had been alive.

And in the corner of the photograph, half-hidden behind her shoulder, stood Claire Bennett.

Smiling.

For a long moment, no one in the room moved.

The photograph lay on the table between us like something alive.

Anna Bennett stood on a windy beach with both twins in her arms. Lily and Owen were babies then, bundled in pale blue blankets, their small faces turned toward the camera. Anna’s smile was tired but unmistakably real. Her hair whipped across one cheek, and one hand curved protectively around Owen’s back.

Behind her, half-hidden near the edge of the frame, stood Claire.

Not the grieving widow.

Not the overwhelmed stepmother.

Not the woman who had claimed Anna was gone.

Claire was smiling.

The kind of smile people gave when they believed the moment belonged to them.

Elise touched the edge of the photograph with gloved fingers and turned it over again.

The date on the back stared up at us.

Eight months ago.

May you like

I heard Lily’s small breath catch.

“She’s alive?” she whispered.
