Chapter 13 - Midnight on the Atlantic

At 3:45 AM, three miles off the coast of Long Island, the luxury ninety-foot yacht The Sovereign swayed gently on the dark ocean swells.
Inside the opulent master salon, Victor Vance sat in a leather armchair sipping vintage cognac, watching the live data streams populate across four high-definition monitors.
“The Moretti network is compromised,” Vance chuckled, raising his glass to his second-in-command. “By sunrise, we will have the encryption keys for every customs terminal from Boston to Miami. Adrian Moretti will wake up to find his entire empire blinded.”
Suddenly, the salon’s overhead lights flickered and died, plunging the luxury vessel into pitch-black darkness.
The yacht’s twin diesel engines sputtered and died with a heavy mechanical shudder.
“What happened to the generator?” Vance barked, standing up in alarm.
Before his bodyguard could reach the door, the salon’s panoramic glass windows shattered inward in a shower of sparkling fragments.
Four heavily armed tactical divers in black wet-suits and night-vision goggles breached the room with lightning speed. Within three seconds, Vance’s bodyguards were disarmed and pinned face-down to the teak floorboards.
Adrian Moretti stepped through the shattered window frame onto the salon rug, completely dry in a black tactical overcoat, holding a silenced sidearm at his side.
Vance staggered backward, knocking his crystal cognac glass to the floor where it shattered in a pool of amber liquid.
“Moretti...?” Vance gasped, his voice cracking in sheer disbelief. “How... how did you find this vessel in the dark?”
Adrian walked slowly across the room, stopping two feet from the terrified financier.
“You installed a surveillance grid in my city, Victor,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, quiet register. “Did you honestly believe I wouldn't track the signal back to the hand holding the remote?”
Marco stepped into the salon, holding a satellite communications jammer and a waterproof briefcase containing Vance’s offshore banking ledgers recovered from the yacht’s private safe.
“The United States Coast Guard and the Federal Bureau of Investigation maritime interdiction team are three nautical miles out, Mr. Vance,” Marco announced smoothly. “They are currently responding to an intercepted distress signal reporting an armed pirate vessel carrying illegal military-grade surveillance hardware in domestic waters.”
Vance’s face drained of every drop of color. “You... you tipped off the feds? You’re a mob boss! You don't call the authorities!”

“I am a legitimate logistics executive defending my port from foreign industrial sabotage, Victor,” Adrian replied, stepping back toward the boarding ramp with absolute, effortless grace. “Enjoy the next thirty years inside a federal penitentiary.”
As Adrian’s extraction team descended into their waiting interceptor boat, the sirens of three Coast Guard cutters blared across the dark Atlantic waters, boxing in The Sovereign under blinding searchlights.
