Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Past

The silence in the grand foyer was suffocating. The only sound was the faint, rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the hallway. Alexander Sterling’s eyes, usually sharp and unyielding in the boardroom, were completely undone. They searched Elena’s face, tracing the exhausted lines around her eyes, the nervous tremble of her lips, and finally, settling back onto Lily.
"Five years, Elena," Alexander said, his voice a low, gravelly whisper that seemed to tear from his throat. "I have lived in this house, walked past you every single day for the last five years. Why did you look down? Why did you hide her from me?"
Elena’s breathing hitched. She instinctively pulled Lily closer, shielding the little girl from the intensity of the moment. "I didn't hide her, Alexander. I tried to tell you. When I found out I was pregnant, you had just moved to Los Angeles. I called. I wrote letters. I stood outside the gates of your first company headquarters for three days in the pouring rain."
Alexander’s brow furrowed, a dark storm brewing in his eyes. "I never received a single letter. My security... they never told me you were there."
"Your mother's assistant told me you were done with me," Elena said, the pain of that five-year-old rejection bleeding into her voice. "She handed me a check for fifty thousand dollars and told me that if I ever tried to contact you again, your lawyers would bury me. I tore the check up. I just wanted you to know. But when I saw you on the news, standing next to Victoria, looking so untouchable... I realized my world and yours were no longer the same."
Alexander took a step back, running a hand through his dark hair. The betrayal of his own inner circle was a physical blow. Someone had intercepted her. Someone had stolen five years of his daughter's life from him.
Upstairs, hiding in the shadows of the mezzanine, Victoria clutched the velvet railing. Her perfectly manicured nails dug into the fabric until her knuckles turned white. A maid's bastard child. The thought made her stomach turn. If this got out to the press, or worse, if Alexander decided to claim the child, Victoria’s position as the future Mrs. Sterling was entirely ruined.
"Elena," Alexander said, his voice finding its usual commanding authority, but softened with a profound sadness. "Go pack your things."

Elena’s heart dropped to her stomach. "Alexander, please, I need this job—"
"You're not leaving the estate," he interrupted, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "You're moving out of the servant's quarters. You and Lily are taking the East Wing master suite. Until I figure out who kept you from me, you are the most important people in this house."
