Chapter 2

The following morning, Charles strolled into my hospital room holding a warm thermos of tea and carrying a soft smile that no longer felt comforting to me.

“My dear Serena, my mother feels terribly sorry about the misunderstanding,” Charles said smoothly. “Let us just forget about what happened at the house and move forward.”

I stared back at him in complete silence.

“Did you ask the doctor if I might lose my memory permanently?” I asked coldly.

His artificial smile flickered for a fraction of a second before he quickly recovered his cool composure.

“Doctors say all kinds of bizarre things when a patient is feeling so overwhelmed and confused,” Charles replied dismissively.

I chose not to say another word.

Shortly after Charles left the room, an unfamiliar man wearing a sharp navy suit stepped through the doorway.

“Are you Mrs. Serena Caudill?” the sharp man asked politely.

“Yes, that is me,” I replied carefully.

“My name is Robert Choate, and I am the head legal counsel for Jonathan Caudill,” the attorney stated clearly.

I felt my chest tighten instantly upon hearing that specific full name.

Jonathan Caudill was the real name of my biological father, the wealthy man I had been led to believe had died many years ago.

Robert Choate placed a thick leather folder directly onto my bed sheet.

He calmly explained that my biological father owned Caudill Enterprises, a massive corporate conglomerate with extensive real estate operations spanning across multiple states. I had been separated from him during my childhood due to a messy custody battle, which led to me growing up with my adoptive family.

My real father had never stopped searching for me over the long years.

When he finally tracked me down and discovered whom I had married, he immediately hired private investigators to look into the background of the Dupont family.

That was when the real motive behind my torment finally surfaced.

The massive estate where Beatrice lived and boasted about as her family heritage was actually built on prime land that had originally belonged to my maternal grandfather.

Years ago, the Dupont family had mortgaged the entire property to cover bad debts and almost lost everything to the bank.

My father had quietly purchased that debt through a holding company to protect my future inheritance.

The legal contract granted the family a ten-year window to repay the full balance.

There were only twenty-seven days remaining before that strict deadline expired.

“If they fail to pay the total amount,” Robert Choate explained, “the legal rights to the entire estate revert directly to the Caudill estate, which makes you the primary beneficiary.”

I sat frozen on the bed as the shock washed over me.

“Does Charles already know about this legal clause?” I asked breathlessly.

Robert Choate pulled several printed pages from his leather briefcase.

They were private text messages exchanged between Charles, Beatrice, and a corrupt local notary who was currently under federal investigation.

They explicitly discussed securing an official psychiatric diagnosis, taking total control of my personal bank accounts, and forcing me to sign legal forms while I was heavily drugged.

They did not just want to keep the land for themselves.

They wanted to keep me legally incapacitated so I could never challenge their ownership in court.

“We need them to remain entirely unaware that you have discovered their secret plot,” Robert Choate advised me firmly.

Later that afternoon, I agreed to play along with their sinister scheme by pretending to be mentally confused.

Hidden recording devices were discreetly installed around my room to document any future attempts at illegal coercion.

Beatrice and her daughter Violet arrived at the hospital that exact evening.

Believing I was fast asleep, they began whispering quietly near the window.

“The special tea worked far better than we originally anticipated,” Violet whispered with a cruel laugh.

Beatrice let out a quiet chuckle in agreement.
