Chapter 5

Beatrice confronted me directly in the main living room.

“All of this chaos happened simply because you never knew your proper place in this home,” Beatrice spat viciously.

“And what exactly was my proper place?” I asked calmly.

“Charles was going to save this entire family,” Beatrice yelled angrily. “We simply needed you to cooperate with us!”

“Did cooperating mean making me dangerously sick?” I asked back.

Beatrice went dead silent for a moment.

Violet quickly stepped out from behind the hallway wall.

“Mother, please do not say another word to her!” Violet urged frantically.

However, Beatrice was far too furious to restrain herself.

“I only gave her the exact herbal mixture that was recommended to us!” Beatrice screamed back. “Nobody said she was going to get so terribly sick from it!”

That single admission sealed her fate entirely.

The entire exchange was captured on hidden recording equipment and immediately turned over to the police alongside my official toxicology reports.

Investigators later uncovered text messages where Beatrice explicitly asked how long the severe confusion and body tremors caused by the toxic brew would last.

I had spent months wondering why my mother-in-law harbored such intense hatred for me.

The harsh truth was that she did not even hate me out of emotion.

She had tried to destroy my mind purely for financial gain.

Chloe, on the other hand, was driven by pure bitter jealousy.

When I finally confronted her inside Robert Choate’s legal office, she completely dropped her innocent facade.

“You always had everything handed to you!” Chloe screamed at me across the table. “A wealthy family waiting for you, unlimited money, talent, and a successful firm, yet you still played the humble victim!”

“Is that why you chose to sleep with my husband behind my back?” I asked directly.

A heavy, suffocating silence immediately filled the entire room.

Charles slowly hung his head in shame, while Beatrice closed her eyes tightly.

That was the final piece of the puzzle.

Chloe and Charles had been carrying on an affair for nearly two full years.

Their original plan was for Charles to divorce me after draining my business and securing full legal control of the family land.

“He was going to leave you eventually anyway,” Chloe spat bitterly. “I was simply smart enough to get what I deserved.”

“No,” I replied softly. “You were simply far crueler.”

The legal proceedings moved forward over the following months.

There were no magical shortcuts, as the case required endless expert testimony, detailed accounting audits, and multiple court hearings.

However, the mountain of evidence was far too overwhelming for them to escape.

Charles ultimately faced severe criminal charges stemming from financial fraud, forgery, and unlawful restraint.

When I met with him one last time to finalize our divorce papers, he looked like a broken shell of his former self.

“Serena, please listen to me, Chloe completely manipulated my actions,” Charles pleaded desperately.

“You were over thirty years old, Charles,” I reminded him firmly. “No one forced you to lock up your sick wife and try to steal her life.”

“I was just so desperate,” Charles whimpered softly.

“No, you made a conscious choice,” I stated clearly.

He slowly lowered his gaze toward the floor.

“If I could only turn back time,” Charles whispered softly.

“I wish I could turn back time as well,” I replied calmly. “I would go straight back to the day I met you and keep walking right past you.”

We signed the final divorce papers in silence.

For the first time in four long years, I felt a quiet peace inside myself where his manipulative voice no longer dictated my worth.

Chloe attempted to avoid prison by laying all the blame onto Charles, while Violet claimed she was merely following orders from her family.

Beatrice repeatedly claimed she acted solely to protect her family legacy.

Yet the historical land records revealed a truth that humbled them all.

The estate had never truly belonged to them in the way they claimed.

Years ago, my biological father had personally purchased the mortgage debt to protect the land from being lost at a public auction, and the family had completely failed to meet the repayment terms over the ten-year period.

When the legal ownership reverted to me, a group of extended relatives called an emergency meeting in Savannah.

Uncle Thomas took the lead in addressing me.

“Serena, we all know you legally own this entire property now,” Uncle Thomas said quietly. “However, this land has been tied to our family name for generations.”

Another relative quickly added to the statement.

“You are divorced from Charles now, which means you are no longer a part of this family,” the relative argued.

I looked at them with a calm smile.

“My legal name was never changed to match yours,” I pointed out clearly. “And even if it had been, my legal rights do not depend on my marriage to Charles.”

Nervous whispers broke out across the room.

I placed a thick legal file directly onto the center table.

“My father paid off a debt that this family could not cover,” I explained to the room. “You were given ten full years to honor the deal, but you failed.”

“Are you going to throw us out onto the street?” Beatrice asked quietly from the back of the room.

The very woman who had thrown ice water over my burning face now refused to look me in the eye.

“No, I am not,” I answered firmly.

Several relatives let out a long sigh of relief.

“However, I am not handing this land back to you either,” I added clearly.

I carefully explained my final decision for the estate.

A large portion of the property would be placed into an educational trust dedicated to community development, while another section would generate funding for college scholarships aimed at supporting underprivileged local youth.

The main historical home could still be utilized by the extended family for gatherings, provided they strictly respected the new legal rules.

Uncle Thomas stared at me thoughtfully for a very long time.

“You could easily sell this entire plot for millions of dollars,” Uncle Thomas noted softly.

“Yes, I certainly could,” I agreed.

“Why choose to do this instead?” Uncle Thomas asked gently.

I took a moment to think about my adoptive parents, who never possessed millions of dollars but had showered me with unconditional love without ever asking for anything in return.

“Because a true legacy is not about accumulating land,” I answered clearly. “It is about deciding what meaningful good we leave behind for others after we are gone.”

Beatrice broke down in tears and quietly walked out of the room, and for the first time in her life, no one followed her.

My biological father arrived in town shortly after the legal proceedings wrapped up.

Our initial reunion was not a picture-perfect moment, as I carried many deep questions and he carried years of silent guilt.

Yet as we sat across from each other talking for hours, we began building a genuine relationship step by step.
