Chapter 3

“Charles will bring the legal papers here tomorrow,” Beatrice noted. “As soon as the doctor signs off that she is disoriented, he will easily take care of the rest.”

I felt a sudden wave of nausea washing over me as I lay perfectly still.

A few minutes later, my husband entered the room carrying a thick yellow folder.

Inside that folder were full powers of attorney to manage my business accounts, official corporate transfers for my design firm, and a complete release form for the land rights.

Charles gently grabbed my right hand.

“Mother, hold her legs still,” Charles ordered strictly. “Violet, grab her other arm so she does not move.”

He pulled out a pad of black stamp ink to force my thumb onto the signature line.

I remained completely motionless until his hand was just inches away from pressing my thumb onto the paper.

Suddenly, I groaned loudly and began gasping heavily for air.

All three of them instantly panicked and stepped back in fear.

“We had better finish this tomorrow,” Charles said nervously. “First, we need to get the final medical report from the doctor.”

They quickly stuffed the documents back into the folder and prepared to walk out.

Before leaving the room, my husband leaned right down close to my ear.

“Do not blame me for this, Serena,” Charles muttered coldly. “You never knew how to properly appreciate what you had.”

The moment the door clicked shut, I opened my eyes and let out a long breath.

However, Robert Choate sent another urgent report to my phone just moments later.

Charles had been secretly diverting high-paying clients away from my firm into a fake shell corporation for several months.

The sole owner of that fraudulent entity was registered under the name Chloe Bennett.

Chloe had been my absolute best friend ever since our early college days.

She was the only person in the entire world to whom I had disclosed the true identity of my wealthy biological father years ago.

In that devastating moment, I realized that Charles had never discovered my true background by sheer luck.

Chloe had betrayed me and handed him every single detail.

That meant their twisted plan had been carefully put into motion long before I ever fell ill.

The absolute worst secret was still waiting to be brought into the light.
