Chapter 11

"Arthur Sterling?" The name sent a jolt of alarm through my veins. Sterling was the most feared, high-priced defense attorney in corporate America—a legal mercenary who specialized in shielding billionaires, crooked politicians, and defense conglomerates from federal prosecution. "Marcus was arrested on felony torture charges. How did Sterling get him in front of a judge before sunrise on Christmas morning?"

"Because Marcus’s corporate entity, Hayes Cyber Defense, holds active classified infrastructure contracts with the Department of Homeland Security," Alex explained, her fingers flying across her laptop keyboard to bring up encrypted docket entries. "Sterling argued that the state raid on Marcus’s Lake Forest residence was an illegal breach of sensitive federal defense property. He claimed the seized servers contain compartmentalized military cryptography that the State Attorney General has no clearance to possess."

"That's a smoke screen!" I said, my voice rising in disbelief. "The servers contain footage of my brother abusing a five-year-old child!"

"Sterling doesn't care about the truth; he cares about jurisdictional technicalities," Alex countered grimly. "He filed an emergency motion alleging that you orchestrated this entire operation as a targeted corporate espionage attack. He claims you manipulated Sophia, coached her to fabricate domestic abuse allegations, and utilized your media connections to destroy Marcus’s firm in order to steal intellectual property for a documentary exposé."

"That’s insane! Look at the medical scans! Look at Dr. Vance's forensic report!"

"Sterling is already five steps ahead of us," Alex said, turning the laptop screen toward me.

On the display was a heavily redacted medical file bearing the letterhead of the St. Moritz Pediatric Neurological Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, dated three months earlier.

"What is this?" I demanded.

"It’s a fabricated medical profile prepared by Marcus’s private retained specialists," Alex said, her voice shaking with disgust. "Marcus had an offshore medical trust set up in September. It diagnoses Sophia with severe Pediatric Somatoform Dissociative Disorder accompanied by compulsive self-harm and pathological confabulation. The file claims that Sophia deliberately inflicts contusions upon herself and invents elaborate accusations against authority figures as part of an incurable psychological condition."

The sheer, calculated evil of Marcus’s foresight left me dizzy. He hadn't just tortured his daughter; he had constructed a legal, medical, and psychological labyrinth months in advance to invalidate her voice if she ever found the courage to speak.

"And it gets worse," Alex continued. "Because of the alleged federal security breach, Judge Vance granted Sterling's emergency petition for a temporary injunction. Marcus was released on a five-million-dollar corporate bond an hour ago. Elisa is already back at the estate with a team of private crisis managers. And Judge Vance signed an Immediate Physical Recovery Order commanding that Sophia be remanded into the custody of an elite private medical transport service hired by Marcus's legal trust."

The corridor seemed to tilt beneath my feet. "They’re trying to take her out of the country."

"Sterling’s private transport team has already landed at O’Hare," Alex said, pointing to a flight manifest on her screen. "They have an executive medical transport jet chartered for Zurich departing at two o'clock this afternoon. If Sophia gets put on that plane, she will be placed in a closed, high-security private psychiatric facility in the Swiss Alps under Marcus's legal conservatorship. You will never see her again, and the state of Illinois will lose all legal jurisdiction to rescue her."

"Where is Agent Reyes?" I demanded, my pulse hammering against my temples. "The State Attorney General has an active child endangerment warrant!"

"Reyes is trapped in an emergency federal hearing in the Dirksen Federal Building right now," Alex said. "The Department of Defense filed an inquiry into the seized server blades. Until the federal magistrate rules on whether the state search warrant violated federal defense secrecy protocols, the state AG's office has been ordered to freeze all proceedings. Reyes cannot send state troopers to stop Marcus's private transport without a direct federal clearance."

"They're using the government to tie our hands while Marcus steals the child," I said, cold adrenaline surging through my limbs.

At that moment, the elevator at the end of the pediatric corridor chimed.

Two men in dark, tailored charcoal suits stepped out onto the polished floor. They had the rigid, disciplined posture of former military contractors, their earpieces discreetly coiled behind their collars. Between them walked a tall, immaculate man in his late fifties with slicked-silver hair, wearing a bespoke cashmere overcoat and carrying a gold-embossed leather briefcase.
