Chapter 18

A collective gasp echoed across the benches.

"That's absurd!" AUSA Lin protested, leaping up. "They’re using a national security loophole to shield a torturer!"

"The law is absolute, Your Honor!" Sterling countered aggressively. "Under the National Security Act, this hearing must be adjourned immediately. The child, the evidence, and the defendants must be transferred to federal protective quarantine under military supervision within twenty-four hours!"

Judge Campbell looked at the executive document, his jaw tightening so hard the muscles jumped in his cheek. He slammed his gavel down with explosive fury.

"This court is in temporary recess until eight o'clock tomorrow morning for emergency classified jurisdictional verification!" Campbell declared, his voice shaking with anger. "The child remains under temporary United States Marshals protection at a secured location. Marshals, clear the courtroom!"

As the gallery erupted into pandemonium, Marcus Hayes stood up slowly from the defense table. He turned toward me, adjusted his silk tie, and locked his slate-gray eyes onto mine.

A cold, mocking smile spread across his face.

He didn't need to say a word. He had twenty-four hours to make the evidence disappear, silence the witnesses, and use his shadow connections to tear Sophia away from me forever.

The battle wasn't over. The real war was about to begin.

Chapter 6: The Song of the Little Bird

The secured holding suite on the twelfth floor of the Dirksen Federal Building was quiet save for the relentless howl of the blizzard rattling the thick exterior panes. It was 2:00 AM.

Sophia slept on a rollaway cot in the corner of the room, wrapped in three layers of heated hospital blankets. Two armed Deputy United States Marshals stood guard outside the reinforced steel door, their heavy boots pacing a steady rhythm in the corridor. Dr. Claire Vance sat in an armchair nearby, gently monitoring Sophia’s vitals and replacing the sterile therapeutic compress on the little girl’s bruised thigh.

Across the long conference table, the blue light of three laptops illuminated our desperate war room. Alex’s fingers flew across her keyboard with furious, caffeinated speed, while Special Agent Teresa Reyes spoke in harsh, hushed tones into a secure satellite phone connected to the Department of Justice headquarters in Washington, D.C.

"Sterling’s defense certificate didn't come through standard Department of Defense channels," Alex whispered, spinning her screen toward me. "Look at the digital signature on the National Security Sequestration Injunction. It was authorized directly by Assistant Deputy Director Vance Albright of the Defense Information Systems Agency."

"Albright," I repeated, the name triggering an immediate memory. "Check Marcus's master vault. Look in the extortion archive under federal procurement."

Alex executed a targeted script across the decrypted titanium drive. Within seconds, a secure folder opened, revealing dozens of timestamped surveillance videos, offshore banking transfers, and encrypted chat logs between Marcus and Albright spanning eighteen months.

"Marcus had Albright completely compromised," Alex said, her eyes wide as she read through the financial ledgers. "Albright had amassed over two million dollars in illicit gambling debts through offshore accounts in Macau. Marcus bought the debt through a shell corporation, then used it to force Albright to sign emergency defense security classifications whenever Marcus needed federal immunity."

"It was never about national security," I said, a wave of cold clarity washing over me. "Marcus fabricated the classified status of that drive hours before the raid. He used a blackmailed federal official to manufacture a bogus FISA injunction to freeze Judge Campbell’s court."

Agent Reyes hung up the satellite receiver, her face hardened into stone. "I just briefed the Inspector General of the Department of Defense and the United States Attorney General. Federal agents and military counterintelligence officers are executing a search warrant on Director Albright’s residence in Arlington, Virginia right now."

"Will they reach him before eight o'clock?" I asked, my pulse pounding.

"Albright is already in federal custody," Reyes replied, a grim smile touching her face. "He folded the second military police walked through his door. He admitted that Marcus Hayes threatened to destroy his family if he didn't issue that emergency defense seizure order to bury the child abuse evidence."

I looked over at Sophia. In the dim glow of the suite's floor lamp, her breathing was soft and peaceful, her small hand resting over her mended plush rabbit.
