Chapter 7

Agent Reyes was a woman in her late forties with razor-sharp features, salt-and-pepper hair cut close at the neck, and twenty years of experience dismantling high-profile criminal networks. On the center console between us, an emergency judicial decree glowed on her encrypted tablet—signed at 2:40 AM by a Cook County Presiding Emergency Judge under the State Child Endangerment Intervention Protocol.
Attached to the order was a temporary protective custody directive assigning kinship guardianship to me, pending a full evidentiary hearing, along with an immediate digital preservation warrant authorizing the seizure of all on-site server hardware.
"Your brother’s profile is extensive, Michael," Reyes said, her eyes fixed on the snowbound highway as the heavy SUV plowed through a fresh drift. "Three active defense contracts, high-level clearance with Homeland, direct digital integration with local municipal feeds. If we did this through standard dispatch, he would have known we were rolling out of the garage before my boots hit the pavement."
"He knows how to disappear evidence," I said, my knuckles white against the door handle. "If he thinks there’s an investigation, the local backups will be purged within sixty seconds."
"Which is why we aren't knocking to ask for an interview," Reyes replied, reaching down to click her radio mic. "Convoy units, maintain radio silence on standard channels. We execute silent approach at the gate. Master breaker access first, followed immediately by structural containment."
Beside me, my phone buzzed with an incoming encrypted burst from Alex, who had remained at my loft coordinating digital forensic protocols with the state’s cyber task force.
*Cellular signal jammer is active within 500 meters of the estate,* Alex’s text read. *He won't be able to trigger a remote cloud purge from his mobile device. You have to secure the physical drive array in his basement server room before he reaches the hard-reset panel.*
"We have thirty minutes before dawn," I told Reyes. "Sophia’s bedroom is on the second-floor west wing. Marcus's office and server room are directly beneath it on the ground floor."
"Understood," Reyes said. "Let's bring this child home."
At 3:48 AM, our four-vehicle convoy killed its headlights and turned off the private suburban lane, gliding through the open perimeter gate after tactical officers bypassed the optical sensors. The sprawling stone manor rose out of the falling snow like a dark, silent monolith. The holiday lights had been shut off on a timer, leaving only the cold amber lanterns on the stone pillars casting long shadows across the immaculate snowdrifts.
Within ten seconds of putting the vehicles in park, six heavily armed officers in tactical gear moved into position across the perimeter, securing the rear patio, side entries, and garage exits.
Agent Reyes, Dr. Vance, and two senior child welfare investigators marched up the front stone steps, with me following directly behind.
Reyes didn't gently ring the festive holiday chime. She hammered her heavy fist against the solid mahogany door with thunderous, concussive force.
"State law enforcement! Open the door!"
The silence of the estate was shattered. Across the lawn, motion sensor floodlights snapped on, bathing the stone facade in blinding white light.
Inside, muffled shouting echoed down the high-ceilinged foyer. Footsteps hurried across the hardwood.
A moment later, the electronic deadbolt clicked, and the massive front door swung open.
Marcus stood in the threshold, wearing gray silk pajama bottoms and an unbuttoned flannel shirt. His hair was slightly disheveled, but his face hardened instantly into an icy mask of calculated authority. Behind him, Elisa stood at the bottom of the curved staircase in a long satin robe, clutching the lapels to her throat, her eyes wide with shock and fury.
"What is the meaning of this?" Marcus demanded, stepping forward to block the entrance, his voice ringing with cold indignation. "Do you have any idea who I am? You are trespassing on private property. Get off my porch before I have the County Sheriff suspend your badges."

Agent Reyes didn't blink. She stepped straight into Marcus’s space, driving a laminated court order against his chest.
"Marcus Hayes, I am Special Agent Teresa Reyes with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. This is an Emergency Child Protective Intervention and Digital Search Warrant issued by the Circuit Court. We are here to execute immediate physical removal of the minor, Sophia Hayes, and secure all on-site digital recording media."
