Chapter 12

Arthur Sterling.
Behind them stood two uniformed Lake County Sheriff deputies, their faces unreadable, handguns holstered at their hips.
Sterling walked down the hallway with absolute, predatory confidence, his polished oxfords clicking rhythmically against the linoleum. When he reached our consultation alcove, he stopped, his cool blue eyes fixing directly on mine with the detached amusement of a shark sizing up prey.
"Michael Hayes," Sterling said, his voice deep, resonant, and dripping with condescending polish. "I am Arthur Sterling, chief counsel for your brother, Marcus Hayes, and Hayes Cyber Defense."
I stepped squarely in front of the glass door leading to Sophia’s room, blocking the threshold with my body. "You don't take one more step down this hall."
Sterling offered a thin, mechanical smile. He opened his briefcase, produced a crisp, certified legal document bearing a gold embossed judicial seal, and held it out toward me.
"This is an Emergency Invalidation and Custodial Restoration Order executed two hours ago by the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Court," Sterling said smoothly. "The unauthorized ex parte protective custody order obtained by Agent Reyes has been vacated due to gross jurisdictional overreach and unlawful acquisition of protected defense infrastructure. By order of the court, the minor, Sophia Hayes, is to be released immediately into the care of Dr. Jonathan Mercer and the Global Medical Transport team for transfer to an accredited private pediatric care facility."
"She’s a victim of severe felony abuse," I said, my voice vibrating with lethal intensity. "She has periosteal bone trauma and grip fractures inflicted by Marcus. I saw the marks. The hospital staff documented every millimeter."
Sterling didn't even blink. "Any injuries the child possesses are well-documented manifestations of her diagnosed dissociative self-harm condition, as attested by three board-certified international specialists. Your brother and his wife have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars attempting to manage their daughter’s tragic neurological disability, only for you to exploit a sick child for personal and professional gain."
"You know that’s a lie," I snarled, stepping closer to Sterling, my fists clenched at my sides. "You know Marcus engineered that dining chair to torture her. The state has the video backups from the house."
"The state possessed unverified, illegally seized digital files that have now been sequestered under a federal national security gag order," Sterling countered, his voice dropping into a chilling, measured threat. "Those files are inadmissible in any state proceeding. And if you attempt to publish, leak, or describe the contents of those drives, you will be indicted under the Federal Espionage Act before sundown. My client has been extraordinarily patient with your delusions, Michael. But patience has run out."
One of the Lake County deputies stepped forward, resting a hand on the leather strap of his duty belt. "Mr. Hayes, we have a direct judicial mandate to enforce this order. You need to step away from the door and allow the medical transport personnel to prepare the child."
Dr. Claire Vance stepped out of the room, positioning herself directly beside me, her arms crossed over her white coat.
"I am the chief attending physician in pediatric trauma at this facility," Claire declared with razor-sharp authority. "The patient is currently recovering from systemic physical trauma and severe acute stress response. Under Illinois Public Health Code Section 45, no patient may be discharged or transferred from an emergency trauma unit without the explicit medical clearance of the attending physician. I have not signed a discharge order, and I will not permit this child to be moved."
Sterling’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, bureaucratic brutality.
"Dr. Vance, if you obstruct the execution of a circuit court order, I will file an emergency motion for criminal contempt against you personally within the hour, alongside an administrative complaint with the state medical board to revoke your license. Furthermore, Hayes Cyber Defense will initiate an immediate fifty-million-dollar tortious interference lawsuit against Northwestern Memorial Hospital."
Sterling turned back to the Lake County deputy. "Deputy, execute the court order."
May you like
The deputy hesitated for a fraction of a second, intimidated by Claire's stance, but then reached toward the glass door handle. "Step aside, sir."
"Wait," Alex interrupted loudly, stepping forward with her laptop held aloft. Her screen was flashing with a bright red data stream. "Deputy, before you touch that door, you might want to look at this incoming notification from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois."
