Chapter 11 - ELENA’S SECRET BROTHER

My mother’s advocate notes showed a private meeting after Finn’s birth.
CLAIM CONCERNS CHILD’S LEGAL FAMILY HISTORY, NOT PATERNITY.
Good.
Then:
ANTHONY RUSSO HAS PROVIDED DOCUMENTS INDICATING ELENA’S MATERNAL FAMILY USED ANOTHER SURNAME BEFORE 1993.
The original surname:
REED.
Anthony Reed.
Rachel Reed.
Noah Reed.
Not a random connection.
Family.
Then came the truth.
Anthony claimed to be Elena’s biological half-brother.
Victor stared.
“Elena had a brother?”
Apparently, yes.
Anthony had spent childhood in foster care.
Elena grew up with their mother.
They had different fathers.
Anthony found Elena when she was twenty-eight.
She initially thought he was lying.
Then records confirmed it.
Victor never knew.
Then we found Anthony’s later change-of-name paperwork.
After leaving Chicago, he had adopted another surname.
LANE.
My stomach dropped.
Lane.
My mother’s surname.
Why?
The affidavit said:
FAMILY REUNIFICATION.
Sponsor/family contact:
MARJORIE LANE.
Then the relationship field.
MOTHER.
I stopped breathing.
My mother had never told me she had another child.
But the supporting document clarified it.
An adult-adoption petition.
Marjorie Lane had legally adopted Anthony when he was twenty-six.
Seven years before she died.
My mother had an adult son.
My legal brother.
And Anthony was Elena’s biological half-brother.
Which meant—
long before I entered Victor Rossi’s house—
I was already Finn’s aunt.
Not by blood.
By family.
On the last page was a handwritten note from Mom.
HARPER — IF YOU EVER FIND THIS, ANTHONY ASKED ME NOT TO TELL YOU UNTIL HE COULD DO IT HIMSELF.
Then:
He is not missing.
He has been waiting until Victor was ready to hear why Elena hid him.
And finally:
If Finn ever starts asking why sirens frighten him, Anthony knows the part of Elena’s story that Victor never did.
I read that line four times.
Then looked at Victor.
For once, he did not say:
“I’ll handle it.”
He said nothing.
May you like
So I did.
“I want to find my brother.”
